Hmm, who's older than 30 in anime? If you're counting games, Phoenix Wright comes to mind--he's 34 in the most recent game.

Yet another reason why the Phoenix Wright games are great. There's characters in them of all ages. The main playable characters are usually mid-twenties at least because they're supposed to be lawyers, but there's also kids, teens, middle-aged and many fantastic characters in their sixties.

In anime, Kotetsu from Tiger & Bunny is late 30s, as are a few of the other main characters.

In Attack on Titan there are several characters around 30 or over although a lot of them are dead by now because the death count is crazy.

The two main male characters in Cowboy Bebop, Spike and Jet Black, are late 20s - mid 30s.

But in general, in anime it's hard to find main characters that aren't early teens. I couldn't even think of one single woman in anime who isn't just a side character. That's depressing.

Wait, is this official? From his history (and severe baldness) I thought Jet was in his 40s. (Late 20s-mid 30s sounds right for Spike, though.)

As one of the biggest Ace Attorney fans you'll ever meet, let me say: the games' age distribution is not something to brag about. Yes, Phoenix is 34 in Dual Destinies - but only because the game is set ten years after the game his character was designed for. Notice that Apollo's 22 at his first appearance, and Athena is only 18 at hers.

The supporting characters do range in age, but only if you're looking at the men. In AAI2, there's a minor female character who's 60 years old (and looks like she's 80; meanwhile, there's a major 67-year-old male character in the same case who looks like he's in his 50s at most) and another who doesn't seem to age. Aside from them, the ONLY female character over 40 in the entire series who isn't a mother or mother figure and the ONLY female character over 60, period, is Oldbag. And technically we don't even know how old she is. Meanwhile, there are a bunch of dynamic and plot-important male characters over 60.

But it's true that Ace Attorney is better in that way than a lot of anime, and that's pathetic.

What about Plum Kitaki? She must be 30-40-50 and she's awesome in her own right.

Aura Blackquill is 37. Sister Bikini is 48.

Misty Fey? Morgan Fey? It's really not that hard to find middle aged female characters in the game.

Although what's wrong with being a mother? As long as it's not the character's only function, but the Ace Attorney games rarely do that. I think you're being harsh. In most anime you're hard pressed to find major female characters even over 28.

And Wendy Oldbag is fantastic.

That's because you don't watch much anime. There are several shows with a woman main character.

Although I notice you didn't name a single example.

There are a number of older folks in Saint Seiya, though I suppose magically-extended lifespan ought not to count. :p

The numbers go up exponentially if you add characters who're supposedly hundreds of years old, but look and act like hot sixteen-year-olds. (Or weirdly sexualized ten-year-olds, but let's not go there.)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Every single 'old' female anime character I could think of had been aged up in this way. Ugh. Creepy. It would be fine if it wasn't such a trend.

I don't know, man. That series really seems to like them young these days.

Confession time: I was the one who did that ragey secret after finding out that the partner in the next game will be a an eight-year-old with a medical PhD.

H
a hahahagaha ha

I forgot that detail, thanks for the reminder. Kinda wish every new character didn't have to be a gimmicky genius, but mostly I just wish I could have an adult woman feature as an assistant by now.

I'm not sure any of these have official ages, but anime-wise, I thought the main characters of Monster, Black Heaven, Master Keaton, and Golgo 13 were 30+ (or they're very skilled/midlife-crisis-y for their age); maybe the Major from Ghost in the Shell.

Like anon below, I had trouble thinking of a main female character besides the Major that's 30+ and looks/acts it, at least in anime (though I'm more familiar with manga, in general... more examples come to mind there, but mostly within group ensembles or one-shots).

I have a decent number of gay manga and shounen ai with older protagonists. I don't care for being trapped in high school forever myself.

I do this with a lot of Japanese games. The characters are often officially insanely young, much younger than either their character design or actions would sensibly have you believe.

I'm playing Bravely Default at the moment and I mentally age up most of the characters, even though they've been aged up already in the localization. I think they're 14-15 in the original? Even the 16-17 in the localization is ridiculous. They're going round the world on their own, fighting monsters and lifting stupidly big weapons. In my head they're late teens minimum, more like mid-twenties. Whenever it is they would develop the necessary muscle strength, like martial artists or boxers. I know this is silly because nobody human could lift those huge weapons anyway, no matter their age, but it's my brain's way of making it just a little less ridiculous.

I find it hard to age the BD kids up in my brain, because that would mean I would be able to acknowledge that Ringabel and priestess robes guys are creeping on not-children. Wait. I totally have no qualms already aging Ringabel up apparently whoops

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
That part of the game never gets less creepy. Aging them up in my head is the only way I can get through those parts. The rest of the gameplay is insanely enjoyable but I still wish I didn't have to grit my teeth every time the sage appears and starts with the lecherous comments.

I don't really understand your comment. You mean you're just skipping those parts entirely?

There aren't that many anime/manga with older characters, but there are some, and a lot of them are quite good. I think we had a recs thread on here (or some other comm) for good series with older characters.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
idk op, the older I get the more glad I am that there are actually a LOT of older anime characters that I can get into. Some series are a mix of actual older folks along with the teenagers (Tiger & Bunny, Bleach) and some focus more on 20-somethings with almost no teenagers around (One Piece). My favorite JPRGs feature a range of characters from kids to old folks and as long as you aren't fixating on the protag, you'll find plenty to love.

Text: as an older anime fan (i’m naearly 30), i’m slowly getting used to the fact that i will always be older than the characters.

i don’t know why, but i just want to believe SO MUCH that the dangan ronpa students are currently either my age or a year younger, at least. let me have this, please, developers.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. The older I get, the weirder I feel about getting invested in shipping teenage characters. I just want more adult women in anime.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you can at least rest assured that most of their voice actors are closer to your age.
