Finding good anime fanfiction, especially with popular series, is a losing battle. Go for doujins instead; even if they're wildly OOC, they'll still be pretty.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
True. Find some dj that draws the adult characters actually as adults and I'll nearly take them over fanfic anyway.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I love doujinshi.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
OP: That only works as long as there are Doujinshi for your favourite pairings. And while KageHina is cute, that's not my main ship in this manga/anime and since ~95% of doujinshi for Haikyuu!! are KageHina, it gets a little boring after a while.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true with all anime doujinshi. You have to be very lucky if the Japanese fandom is into the same characters or pairings that you are.

I can only think of one example where this turned out to be the case and boy, I thought it was Christmas. I really was not expecting it ever after years of disappointment. Japanese fangirls always seems to be into exactly the stuff I'm not, like it's diametrical fate.

That's really especially true for this fandom. In Free! I'm lucky enough to ship RinHaru, which leaves tons of doujinshi to choose from, but in this fandom, I think KageHina is okay but I'm more into other pairings, which leaves slim pickings.

Replace "Haikyuu!!" fandom with the "Kuroko no Basuke" or "Free!" fandom and you'd be right on the money.

Going to echo the anon and say that finding good anime fiction of a popular series, is definitely a loosing battle.

However, with all three fandoms (even though I don't like "Free!" that much kinda has a love/hate relationship with the series and fandom), I don't mind smut.

I thought of Kuroko no Basuke too. (The number of times I've read the word 'bluenette' in KnB fic is shameful.)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
High five! Did KnB fandom coin that word? I know I encountered 'pinkette' in Naruto first.

Apparently "noirette" is cropping up in Free! fic.

Still not sure if that's more or less obnoxious than calling black-haired character "the raven."

And outside of sports anime, you could replace it with "Attack on Titan" too, because 99% of that fandom's fanworks are terrible AUs and 'edgy' SJW issues too.

I think it's just the trend among most of the age-group who are most prolific when it comes to writing fic for the flavor-of-the-moment shows.

Haikyuu!! secret!

I'm mostly the same; I did a bit of reblogging and fanfic reading while the anime was airing but haven't touched it lately. I did read a couple of decent Hinata/Kageyama fics, but most everything else (both H/K and other pairings) was pretty bad. Sometimes you just have to dig through a lot of shit to find decent fic.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Searching for decent fic amongst a lot of mediocre fic is pretty normal for any fandom.
Having already been through the really shitty fandoms (like SnK, Naruto, or Free!) Haikyuu!! is a breath of fresh air for me. Thankfully Haikyuu!! is big enough to have more to look through but it isn't as ridiculous as other big fandoms. From my experience at least.

Yeah, that's my problem - I think Kagehina is adorable as can be, but they're not my OTP. Active OTP is TsukkiYama (passive OTP Kuroo/Kenma) and especially the TsukkiYama fics seem to be full of depression, suicide attempts and other ~edgy~ mental health issues or are AUs and... ugh, no thanks.

I have never been in an anime fandom where at least 99 percent of the fanfic wasn't terrible. Its one of the (many) reasons I don't do anime fandoms anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I stay the fuck away from anime fandom. Never been a part of one, and I never will.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
That applies to any fandom really.
I've found a lot of good stuff, though I guess for everyone it varies.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of preachy SJW type stuff but I tend to just ignore it.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Daww, Haikyuu!! That screenshot is adorable <3

It seems most new anime attracts the SJW crowd that use fandoms as their podium. Like your secret says, I've seen a couple fics that make Sugawara made a transperson just because he's the mother figure of the team. I've also seen people get offended when [whatever character] is portrayed as anything other than asexual/aromantic.

I don't mind people having their headcanons or writing about them, but it does come of as preachy or trying to be edgy. It's definitely not exlcusive to Haikyuu!! fandom, but since that's the one I'm in most recently they stand out. Thankfully I've found enough good fic to not lose hope.

Image: a still from the anime Haikyuu!!

Text: I love this show. I love it so much. But I can’t get into the fandom. I like/reblog artwork, but the fandom’s general attitude and the fanfiction is largerly terrible. The stories are either completely OOC, weird AUs (like, 70% of the stories are bad AUs), genderbending, full of ~edgy mental health issues ~, terribly researched and just plain badly written.

Seriously, it’s not that difficult doing a little basic research. If you still write the schools like a standard US highschool and can’t even be bothered to look up the very basic rules of volleyball when you write about it, why should anyone be bothered to read it?

As soon as they start using tumblr in the fics and start holding SJW speeches I’m outta there.

Trouble is people apparently love that shit

Plus it’s a fandom where I would prefer more fluff and less kinky smut.

And of course the “maternal” character is the taken transperson.

Mmmh I feel with this one that it's actually not as big as the bigger fandoms (think KnB, Naruto, etc), so there aren't as many fics to really pick from. I mean, there has always been fics with Character A having edgy mental health issues and weird AUs, but they where easily missed because there where also other fics to get them mixed with. Plus, it also takes heavily from tumblr headcanon and whatever its popular at the time over there.

tl;dr My advice is that yeah, stay away from this particular fandom and maybe just follow the blogs that post official information or any blog of your otp. At least that's what I do with in this particular case.

Yeah, it's what I'm doing atm. I have two fandom-oriented blogs I watch which basically pre-filter the tags for me, in a way, and what I still don't like gets x-kit blacklisted, so it's pretty alright. It's mostly art and no fic, but ah, well, I can live with that. There are other fandoms.

(Though I have to admit that the one fanfiction I am following actually is an AU, strangely enough. But it's one of the most IC fics I have found in the fandom and hey, Pacific Rim AU.)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's an anime fandom. What did you expect?
