It's been in the 70s all week here.

I'm seeing a musical on Sunday. And Monday is my mom's birthday.

Aw, so lucky! What musical are you going to see?

The Golden Apple. Which basically nobody's ever heard of! There's this group out here that does staged readings (actors carrying scripts/scores) for one-night-only performances of weird obscure musicals.

Ah! Looks like it will be fun at least. Though, I don't have much experience with staged readings.

How involved a staged reading gets depends on the company and the director putting on that specific show. Musical Theatre Guild usually has fairly fully-realized staging, an 8+ piece orchestra, costumes (especially for the leads), and even some choreography. Which is impressive for 3 days of rehearsal!

I see more staged readings than the average theatre-goer, because another local theatre company does them several times a year. Basically they put on a little festival and do 2 performances each of 3-5 different plays. And from their experience doing those productions with minimal staging, that's how they'll decide what plays they'll do as full productions in upcoming seasons.

It also gives them a chance to put on things that will draw a dedicated theatre audience for 1-2 performances, but are too obscure to give a full run (Aphra Behn's "The Lucky Chance") or are otherwise too unusual to sustain a full run (this was how I saw Armin Shimerman do an unabridged "Richard III").
