Re: Person of Interest; Tolkien; SPN
What can I say, I like creepy ships. I like dark things with sometimes depressing endings, though I like happy endings too. And I like that Celebrimbor ultimately sacrificed himself for his people and to keep the elven rings out of Sauron's hands. Though the idea of him and Narvi hanging out in Valinor is awesome too.
I wouldn't call Turin one of my favorite characters (his father on the other hand). But I like the dark aspects, love his sister, and I like that it isn't just Morgoth's curse but Turin himself very much causes his own destruction. And I like dragons. Anything with dragons.
I totally get that on the NOTP front. I've only just gotten into the fandom so I haven't been oversaturated yet. And the fics where Maedhros is tortured by Morgoth and then rescued by Fingon who helps him heal hits a lot of buttons for me. I read similar things in other fandosm. Hurt comfort all the way for me with lots of hurt followed by lots of comfort.
I do also get being annoyed by people assuming things are established ships. I get that way about things too.
Re: Person of Interest; Tolkien; SPN
(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 02:00 am (UTC)(link)I can just imagine him being tortured for days and not breaking, refusing to tell where the rings were. If you're interested in Celebrimbor and the rings, I'd suggest reading this article:
http://middle-earth.xenite.org/2012/01/18/shhh-its-a-secret-ring/
I found it fascinating. It's all about what Celebrimbor was trying to do with the rings and how Sauron managed to get him to make them (as well as their fate afterwards). It talks about the guilt Celebrimbor might've felt in making the rings, and I think that added layer is very interesting to consider when Sauron is torturing him to find the 3 rings.
Also, have you had a chance to read "The Wanderings of Hurin"? I was a little put out with his decisions in that one, since he ends up destroying Brethil even further but it does resolve his arc with Morwen and you might like it. :)
Re: Person of Interest; Tolkien; SPN
I just think he's a really interesting character. He both wants to escape his family history and surpass it. He wants to help his people so badly that he ends up being decieved (and ultimately he does save them since without the one ring Sauron would likely not have been fully defeated).
I have not seen that article before. I will have to check it out.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 02:14 am (UTC)(link)The Feanorians are fascinating. I tend to like the Sindar and Finolfin's line more but I do think the Feanorians are very interesting. I just wish Feanorian apologists would acknowledge their bad sides and not excuse their darker deeds. It makes them less interesting really.
I hope you like the article. If you do, I find that the author has a lot of insightful things to say about Tolkien.
Do you have any recs on Sauron/Celebrimbor. It sounds like my tastes would be more in line with yours than not with regards to the creepy part of their relationship.
Re: Person of Interest; Tolkien; SPN
I agree that the Feanorians are interesting and the apologists are annoying. Characters with layers are more interesting. I tend to think that Feanor is the worst of them, that Maedhros and Maglor honestly try to escape the oath but can't (and that Maedhros goes through stuff even worse than Celebrimbor), and that the rest are somewhere in the middle. Celebrimbor is even more interesting to me because he escapes the oath and actually refuses to go with his father and does not want to be what is family does, and yet in a lot of ways he makes the rings precisely because he is a Feanorian and wants to be as good as Feanor.
Re: Person of Interest; Tolkien; SPN
(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 03:21 am (UTC)(link)I have so many questions about Feanor that all stem from Finwe. Like, Finwe is supposed to favor Feanor above all. What does that mean with regards to how he raised Fingolfin and Finarfin and their sisters? How could Feanor doubt his father's devotion to him? Was Finwe really ignorant of the growing tension between his sons? Did he do anything about it? I just . . . I would have such a better understanding of the whole Noldor rift if I knew more about what kind of father Finwe was -- what kind of king he was. The only thing we really know about him is that he wanted a bunch of kids and he loved Feanor best.
I do think the psychology of losing his mother explains a lot of Feanor's fears (which is fascinating in itself) but Finwe really should've stepped up and done something. He seems so passive in the narrative.
But, I agree about Feanor being the "worst" of them. He seems so self-centered in a lot of ways. He clearly loves his father but he's also possessive and jealous of that love. He shows no emotion when he basically burns one of his sons alive and he betrays his brother, who just committed a terrible crime at Feanor's bidding. And he has no idea what kind of fate he has unleashed upon his sons. He doesn't think it through, and yet he is consistently the beloved of the Noldor.
I find fics that explore his time in Mandos -- or anything that forces him to confront his actions -- to be endlessly fascinating.
