Re: unpopular opinions
(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 01:59 am (UTC)(link)I posted above, because I didn't see this thread (I'm hiphopfanmix anon), but what would qualify as a good fanmix to you/what should it be about? I've never actually done one...so...
RE: the songs I'm using as I write my fic: I'm kind of using certain songs as a soundtrack, or at least the songs that get played as the credits roll. Or with individual scenes. Or just the overall feel of characters/parinig/moods, etc.
Re: unpopular opinions
(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 02:12 am (UTC)(link)Some people put songs in their fanmixes just because of one line, I prefer songs that fit as a whole. It's honestly very distracting to notice that someone clearly picked a song only because of the chorus while the verses tell a completely different story.
I guess the mood is important to me as well. I have to be able to associate the song not only to the character but to the setting where the character is living. Hip hop is perfectly fine in a fanmix as long as it sounds right for the context. That is of course entirely subjective. (I think most fanmixes are indie/alt just because that's what the people making the fanmixes are listening to)
Also I like when a fanmix sounds like a coherent whole, which is usually helped by putting the songs in certain order so the listener won't get audio-whiplash if there's a sudden huge genre shift.
You're using music as soundtrack for a fic, which is I think somewhat different from just going "I think this song fits this character, I'm gonna pile up 12 of these and post it on tumblr". So honestly I'm not the best person to tell you what to do, you do you.
