Re: unpopular opinions

Inspired by the above music!anon.

I hate most fanmixes, because they're usually either generic love songs or songs that only make sense with the character/pairing if you tilt your head, squint your eyes and ignore half of the lyrics.

Speaking of generic love songs, sometimes I dream of putting together the ultimate cliche fanmix, just because. It would have at least some Florence + the Machine (maybe Cosmic Love), Goo Goo Dolls - Iris, Muse - Undisclosed Desires, perhaps Counting Crows - Accidentally in Love...

Does Cosmic Love get used a lot? I've mostly seen stuff from Ceremonials on mixes. Maybe I'm not in the right places (or maybe I am).

I've seen like two or three mixes that used Cosmic Love, so that was the first one that popped into my head. Aside from that I've seen Kiss with a Fist, Falling, No Light, No Light... Maybe tells something about the couples who's fanmixes I run into. It's hard to decide, and I can't really put half of Florence + The Machine's discography in there, can I?

Okay, I admit, I use Kiss With a Fist, but it's specifically for two characters who beat the crap out of each other and think this is a perfectly healthy, fine thing to do, so long as they don't admit to enjoying each other's comapny. That and 'Hurts So Good' are the only songs I've got that really cover that fucked up situation.

That said, it's pretty much the only Florence and the Machine's song I like, really. (Okay, Dog Days Are Over is pretty cool.)

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Better than most occasions where I've seen Kiss with a Fist used (people who are verbally aggressive with each other and/or villain/hero pairings where it's scattered between angsty love songs). People are free to use Florence + the Machine in their mixes as they please, I'm just picky and occasionally grumpy.

Nah, I don't blame you. I'm kinda astounded people would use that song for anything OTHER than a twisted, physically violent relationship. (My main issue with using it is that the characters I use it for aren't romantically or sexually involved at all, and would be absolutely appalled at the idea. Punching each other is all well and good but REALLY!)

For me, though, genre and feel of music depends as much as the actual lyrical content.

(Not that anyone actually listens to these mixes but me; I just make them because it's how I regiment and keep track of my work time.)

"Howl" is the F+tM song I hear on every single mix. It's gotten to the point where if I hear it I immediately "nope" out of listening to the rest of it.

If you're listening to Ceremonials, you're in the right place. Of course.

music!anon

Don't forget to throw in some Marina and the Diamonds and Lana Del Rey! They're also popular with the fanmix cliché crowd. (Though oddly, I rarely see Marina in the same mix as Florence. Maybe they cancel each other out?)

Re: unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, how could I forget! Lana Del Rey is especially baffling to me, because her music has that specific place and time feel to it. But no, let's use it to all fantasy-related fanmixes ever. I guess Born to Die works for all occasions.

(Is there a Marina vs. Florence war going on that I am not aware of? Because I rarely see them together either)

I suspect they just have very little overlap in style, if not in appeal.

But isn't extrapolating the whole meaning from one line exactly what fanmixes are about?!! Have I been doing this wrong? lol I haven't even done it before.

I posted above, because I didn't see this thread (I'm hiphopfanmix anon), but what would qualify as a good fanmix to you/what should it be about? I've never actually done one...so...

RE: the songs I'm using as I write my fic: I'm kind of using certain songs as a soundtrack, or at least the songs that get played as the credits roll. Or with individual scenes. Or just the overall feel of characters/parinig/moods, etc.

Re: unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure you're doing alright, anon, I'm just picky and grumpy as I might have mentioned.

Some people put songs in their fanmixes just because of one line, I prefer songs that fit as a whole. It's honestly very distracting to notice that someone clearly picked a song only because of the chorus while the verses tell a completely different story.

I guess the mood is important to me as well. I have to be able to associate the song not only to the character but to the setting where the character is living. Hip hop is perfectly fine in a fanmix as long as it sounds right for the context. That is of course entirely subjective. (I think most fanmixes are indie/alt just because that's what the people making the fanmixes are listening to)

Also I like when a fanmix sounds like a coherent whole, which is usually helped by putting the songs in certain order so the listener won't get audio-whiplash if there's a sudden huge genre shift.

You're using music as soundtrack for a fic, which is I think somewhat different from just going "I think this song fits this character, I'm gonna pile up 12 of these and post it on tumblr". So honestly I'm not the best person to tell you what to do, you do you.

Same here. Most fanmixes just don't really make sense character/pairing-wise.

But I don't want the world to see me, cause I don't think that they'd understand, Nonnie.

LOL

OMG do I love Goo Goo Dolls. But yes, fanmix cliche.

I agree. But strangely, those are the fanmixes that get listened to the most. Whereas fanmixes where the person putting it together spent a lot of time and thought on choosing the songs (fitting lyrics, music style and atmosphere together), nobody listens to them because they're not mainstream enough.

(Yes, I'm bitter.)

the problem I think is that there's a million ways of being not-mainstream, and only one of being mainstream
