Re: 50 Shades of Grey
Related, sorta but I feel like 50 Shades got popular because the people who think it's really kinky had never read anything kink-related in their lives. Like seriously, I read that scene from the book they removed (the one about the tampon or whatever) and holy shit the writting was so bad I ended up laughing. It's like the kind of porn you find written by a 13 year old in the Naruto section of ffnet.

Hell, even things like Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty series are twice as kinky and several times more disturbing and that's been out for over thirty years (I seriously doubt we'll ever see a movie adaptation of that one though. If 50 Shades is like 90% porn then Sleeping Beauty is pretty much 100% porn)

Also 50 Shades got more publicity just like Twilight did, even if Anne Rice's stuff has been out there for goodness knows how long. Maybe it also has to do with demographics too? I forgot about this, but being related to Twilight also helped its popularity.
