50 Shades of Grey

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I am so sick of all the tumblr posts talking about how you should boycott it because it is domestic violence or whatnot.

First, the Tumblr audience is full of people who were probably not going to see it anyway. They are those asshles who are all like, "Yeah, we are totally going to boycott this store we have never been to!" And most middleaged housewives don't care about what you think.

Second, it has already sold out in a lot of places. Apparently, the South/Midwest are the people who want to see it the most.

Third, most of the people I have seen reblogging those stupid posts are also into things like Will/Hannibal or Hydra Trash Party. Don't complain about older women enjoying super softcore erotica while you are reblogging posts about how hot it is when Will is having a mental breakdown and Hannibal is "comforting him". Or posts with Bucky being repeatedly raped by Hydra soldiers and commenting about how hot it is.

I don't really care if people wanna go and see it, but I'm still gonna trash the thing.

But they are intelligent teenagers who are capable of thinking critically and separating fantasy from reality. Unlike those poor, impressionable young middle-aged housewives.

I kind of agree with this. I mean, I have all kinds of problems with 50 Shades and will not be seeing it. But at the same time a lot of the same people justify liking other things that have similar problems.

I mean, my biggest problems with it are that rape and domestic violence are justified and/or ignored and that neither the author nor the fans acknowledge that those things are in there. It is okay to get turned on by those things, but don't give me a scene with rape in it and then claim it isn't rape.

But at the same time 50 Shades is targeted in a way that even worse things that are focused on men are not. And that is a problem. Lots of stuff aimed at men contains rape that supposedly isn't rape or domestic violence that is supposedly romantic, and no one calls that stuff out.

I honestly think EL James knows very well she wrote rape. From what I've heard about how 50 Shades came to be, I think she lies a fuckton during interviews in order to sound better and to market an image.

I think there's a difference between rape porn for rape porn's sake and shitting all over the BDSM community. The lead actor's disgusted response to researching consensual BDSM doesn't help matters, either.

Eh, to be fair, most people I've seen writing Hydra trash party fully acknowledge it's fucked up, while 50 Shades is basically a romantization of abuse.

I get your point, I just don't think the comparison stand in that sense. And most criticism I heard of 50 Shades isn't that it exists, but that it's presented as a BDSM-relationship while really it makes most kinky people's eye twitch.

As someone who hasn't actually read the book (but has seen passages) that's what I see most people take issue with. (Not so much the fact that the relationship is fucked up, but that the source material doesn't acknowledge it. It allegedly treats it as something healthy or normal.)

The people reading Hannibal/Will and Bucky rape porn have to know what they're doing and accept it, but those are two different things imo.

Maybe for the Bucky rape porn. But Hannibal/Will? No way. They think it is fluffy as can be.

Frankly, I think E.L.James probably knows it's rapey, too, as it started out as fanfic - but probably can't admit it at this point.

And guys who think its popularity means they can insist that ALL women want a relationship like that. Yes ALL of them, that includes you, woman-who-just-said-she-wasn't-into-BDSM! Didn't you see how popular 50 Shades was? That's what women like! You can't keep denying it, just shut up and admit you want to be dominated!!!

That's what bothers me the most - the idea that just because it's popular, ALL women love it and want a relationship just like that. Or at least all middle-aged women, or housewives, or whatever, like if you're over a certain age just let someone else define your sexuality for you.

Honestly, I've seen assholes use ANYTHING to justify that "all women like this!" I've encountered assholes who used my rape history as proof that I liked it, or even worse, that I was ENCOURAGING rape to happen by ALLOWING it to happen! Like, you could only have the most happy consensual sex things be popular, and trust me, some assholes would find a way to twist it to justify treating women like this.

Because everyone knows women are a hive mind and have no individual tastes or kinks, never mind THOUGHTS or FEELINGS about them.

I... may have used to hang out on a site where we got a LOT of misogynist trolls. We used to have a Troll of the Year contest.

That doesn't actually happen though. It inevitably comes up in every debate about FSOG, but it's a fictitious argument. (OK sure, I concede that the odd man here or there may have said it, but that's true of every idea.)

Yeah, this is not my kink at all, but I have online friends who are into BDSM, and they seem very upset about it. I've reblogged some of that on my tumblr to signal boost that this is not how it is supposed to work.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey

The thing is, the people who enjoy the book won't be going into BDSM. Just like reading a book about someone having satanic ritual sex doesn't make you do satanic rituals, this isn't going to make a bunch of 40 year old women go out and try BDSM.

My biggest disappointment with the 50 Shades movie? It could've brought back the NC-17 rating. After Showgirls, that rating was basically shot, and it could've been brought back to reputability but NOPE. For some unfathomable reason they made it R.

I seriously don't know what they're going to fill the movie WITH. Come on, people were in it for the banging; WHAT ELSE IS THERE?

Nonconsensual money porn. He keeps buying her expensive things that she insists she doesn't want, but he forces her to accept them. Ties in with the Success Object model of male desirability, but they even found a way to make THAT kinda rapey.

Hahaha yeah, Will/Hannibal is totally healthy and positive and an all-around great idea, but how dare you put anything questionable in your oldschool romance, alpha-asshole erotica book/movie. Reminds me of the SPN fans who were drooling over Sam/Lucifer when Lucifer was referring to raping him in hell every five minutes, but got bitterly offended by Becky having sex with Sam (this didn't happen and wasn't going to) after drugging him into falling in love with her. I hope the fans enjoy their movie with minimum hassle.

I fucking agree. I kind of want to go see it now just because Tumblr is having a little shit fit about it.

It cracks me up because people are reblogging that post about how supposedly even the actors are disappointed in the movie just because the sex scenes were hard to film or whatever. I have news for those people: sex scenes aren't easy or fun to film for most any actors.

The text of Hannibal clearly acknowledges how fucked up Will and Hannibal's relationship is. That's kind of the point.

Well, the vocal part of tumblr tends to be really smug about this kind of stuff. It makes them feel cool and mature, even when they are just whinny and uninformed.

Related, sorta but I feel like 50 Shades got popular because the people who think it's really kinky had never read anything kink-related in their lives. Like seriously, I read that scene from the book they removed (the one about the tampon or whatever) and holy shit the writting was so bad I ended up laughing. It's like the kind of porn you find written by a 13 year old in the Naruto section of ffnet.

I think this must be it because there's been way kinkier mommy porn out there. Hell, even things like Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty series are twice as kinky and several times more disturbing and that's been out for over thirty years (I seriously doubt we'll ever see a movie adaptation of that one though. If 50 Shades is like 90% porn then Sleeping Beauty is pretty much 100% porn)

I agree. I don't like het porn, let alone terrible het porn. But seriously, it was written by a woman, for women. The people who read it are almost definitely identifying with the protagonist, and this story isn't much more than a simple erotic fantasy. Wanting to be dominated by a dark, handsome, angsty billionaire is not exactly unheard of in the genre.

By all means, let's caution that this is not a realistic and healthy BDSM relationship. But as erotic fantasy, I don't see this as problematic beyond the terrible writing.
