I read this book several years ago! I'm so surprised to see it on here.

I agree about the gaslighting thing. I haven't seen the old movie that people got the word "gaslighting" from, so when I heard about the concept, this book was the first thing I thought of.

I have another book by this author, called Melbury Square, but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. Have you read that?

The movie is actually on tonight, if you happen to get Turner Classic Movies in some fashion! I watched it for the first time on the same channel and thought it was very good. It's also Angela Lansbury's film debut c:

Ooh, thanks! I might watch if I'm still up. I actually have it so I can watch it whenever I want but I still end up watching it every time I see that it's on. It's one of my favorite movies. And speaking of Angela Lansbury, I think this was actually my introduction to her, other than as a voice in Beauty and the Beast.

You're welcome! I hope you got to see some of it (I understand about finicky bedtimes). I do the same thing when I own movies, too. Blu-rays, even! I guess it's just a communal instinct.

Hmmm, I think my real introduction to her was via Broadway osmosis--I know Sweeney Todd was one of her big roles--but this was my first time seeing her as a young actress, which was really neat! I caught another movie this past week that also featured her. One day I'll try to see her full catalog.

See, I thought there was no fandom for old books, and then I found out that there are people who have actually written Blue Castle fanfics, and some fanart.

Not a lot, admittedly, but considering that I didn't think that there'd be any...

Knowing that Blue Castle fanfics and fanart exists warms my heart.

It's amazing. And it's actually really good (what I read).

I'll have to try and check it out! Did you find it on AO3?

AO3 and ff.net both, though there is some overlap. :)

Thank you! I'm excited to do a huge re-read and binge now, haha.

You're welcome! I hope you enjoy them~ :D

Same here! I LOVE that book, it's one of the ones I reread every year, but I never met anyone in real life who's heard of it. None of the fic particularly struck me but I was glad to not be alone. (There's fanart??)

I haven't reread it since I left my Mom's copy at home when I moved for college, but I found it at the library again recently, and man, I love it so much!

Only a little, unfortunatly. And by that I mean like, two. I tried to find some on dArt, but I didn't have a lot of luck there. :( It's mostly on tumblr, all like, two of them. >_>

I'm a bit disappointed that Valancy is apparently wearing that snuffy-brown high-necked thing from home after Barney shingled her hair, but otherwise she looks exactly right.

I'm honestly just pretending that that picture is from after the big end reveal about her not actually dying but before she realizes that Barney does actually love her, in that period when she's home again. ^^;

(Anonymous) 2015-02-09 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes perfect sense! Of course she'd leave all her Blue Castle things on the island!

So, as someone who hasn't read this book, can someone enlighten me on why it's a good example of gaslighting? Because, for all the articles and essays I have to link to people on the subject, I do know people who would "get it" more in fictional context (and yeah, there's the movie, but still).

Also, I'm curious. ^_^

It's been years since I read the book so I don't remember all the details, but it's about a woman whose husband is doing something bad (an affair, or just something shady... I don't remember what it was) and tells her lies that make her think she's going crazy. Telling her she just imagined things that actually happened, and so on.

Text: I always imagined Booth and Ella getting together after the ending.

But there’s no fandom for old books :(

b!S I wish I could give this book to people as an example of gaslighting
