Ah, Meelo. One of the many reasons I quit LoK.

I can't imagine that would happen. Did anything in the finale besides that catch suggest so? I haven't rewatched it.

(ALSO; All the Korra episodes are on Nick for the next two weeks. I think A;TLA ones are too...)

Yes and no.

There was a lot of attention on him in general, compared to Ikki. A lot of people were annoyed, though, because while Meelo has become a badass, there wasn't any real character development (he's still an obnoxious brat) despite the extra attention.

However, it doesn't really look like either of them are getting their tattoos anytime soon, anyway (no one in the New Air Nation has, yet, since Jinora). I don't think him getting his tattoos before Ikki will be a big problem - in part because I don't think tattoos are going to come up for either of them in any potential future works, but also because it was Jinora's demonstration of the traditional air nomad values (paraphrased as teamwork, compassion, wisdom, etc.) that got her the tattoos, not tactical savvy (which Meelo does actually demonstrate quite extensively).

Meelo was the most annoying character. I might have given him a pass, being a child character, but the show gave him waaay too much screen time. Too reminiscent of Aang, except even more obnoxious, and much more unfortunate looking. Not only was Meelo obnoxious, but it was a bit shocking that his parents let him go out on missions, being like, what, five or six years old?

I loved the scene where the eldest girl got her tattoos, though was kind of sad she grew her hair back. She was really cute with the shaved head.

Ugh, I really didn't like Meelo. I could see how they were trying to make him entertaining, and maybe it works for kids idk, but I found him mostly obnoxious. It also didn't make any sense to me that Tenzin let him on missions! The girls was bad enough, but fine - but Meelo? Yeesh.
And don't get me started on the fartbending :|

/hates fun or whatever

(Anonymous) 2015-02-08 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah ia. I wonder if they gave him so much screen time to compensate for the fact that by the final season, the main four were all in their twenties.

which was actually something that made me like LoK more than the original series - the more mature cast - but thinking about it, I wonder if it wasn't a risky decision when it's essentially a kids' show. Hence, the obnoxious twerps stealing the camera.

It wasn't even just the main four - they gave a relatively large amount of screentime to Tenzin, Lin, and the other adults.
You're definitely right about it being a risk, and that's probably why they did it (and why they need the Cute Animals). But given the way the series played out it just ended up unbalanced imo.
And I'm with you, I really liked the mature cast we got in LoK. I was all set to like LoK better than AtLA tbh, but then it... didn't go the distance.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-08 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think LoK could've benefited from one consistent plot, because having totally separate plots each season made it somewhat episodic. Not that subplots are bad, but I think the most interesting plot was the first one, with the non-benders, and that was severely underplayed (but then again, iirc, the series had only been green-lit for one season at that time).

I still liked it better overall, though. The first had its charms, but I liked the LoK characters more. Not only the main four, but the older adults were really interesting, too.

Agreed. Or, if they had only had two big bads, each one for two seasons, the series might have had more time to really delve into the issues instead of running in and out.

There's a lot of stuff I liked about lok, but ultimately it never grabbed me the way atla did. Maybe it's because of the lack of cohesion, maybe because out of the main four I thought a lot of them were squandered - Mako was a jerk, I wanted more Korra and Asami interaction, I wanted Bolin to get more moments of development instead of ending up the chump so often. The adults were pretty awesome, but... idk. I really think that part of what made me love atla so much was that Zuko's redemption arc was /so/ well done.
LoK had so much potential for me, but ultimately AtLA is my favorite.

Me too. Part of me wondered if the reason Tenzin kept sending Meelo out on all these dangerous missions, despite him being probably under the age of ten, is because he hated Meelo as much as we did and kept hoping he'd get killed. Because seriously, why Tenzin? Jinora, I understand, because she has all those nifty spiritual powers, and she'll need protection when she goes into the spirit realm, so okay, go ahead and send Ikki, but why Meelo?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-08 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I refused to watch the show because of that awful child. Meelo was even worse than the love triangle bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-08 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Meelo is exactly like my seven year old nephew. I tune out his scenes because I can barely put up with one little shit, let alone a cartoon character that acts like him

The whole fartbending thing seemed like such a comedic low hanging fruit from Bryke.

Am I terrible for thinking that's kind of awesome? (I'm a sucker for mundane uses for superpowers.)

Then again, I only saw like, one episode where Meelo even talked, so that might be why.

Fart...bending?

Tbh I could do with never hearing about Meelo ever again. I didn't like him much and I only ended up disliking him more as he got more screen-time.

Text: If it ever comes out -- new canon, Word of God, whatever -- that Meelo got his tattoos before Ikki did, I may actually commit violence.

LOOK AT THIS BADASS GIRL!

But no, all the attention went to Meelo barely catching Tenzin.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-09 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think either of them are getting their air bending tattoos any times soon. But when it does happen I picture Ikki getting them first. Her super curious, super sociable personality seems to lend itself more to airbender spirituality than Meelo's personality does.

He probably will, just by virtue of the fact that the writers clearly don't care about Ikki.
