Re: So I was an asshole on the internet

(Anonymous) 2015-02-09 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I was an asshole on a message board, and some other people were assholes too, but I was the one who got banned.

The reason: my telling another user to "fuck off and die" ran afoul of their policy on bullying, which included a prohibition on telling people to harm or kill themselves.

Is this actually how most people interpret that phrase? Or was the mod who banned me just being oversensitive and/or looking for anything that they could use as a violation to get rid of someone who was being an asshole.

(I'm just curious. I'm not going to try to get back on the message board, since I clearly can't engage calmly and reasonably on the subject under discussion.)

That's a valid reading of the phrase, I think, technically speaking, but it's not how it's usually used. So *shrug*

Yes, this is how most people would interpret it, I think. It was a vile thing to say, and I agree with the mod's decision to ban you.

Okay, let's get this straight. Your message board has a policy on not telling people to harm or kill themselves. You tell someone to "fuck off and die", but somehow you think that the mods are supposed to interpret your comment (one that's frequently used by the sort of awful trolls no mod wants on their board) to mean the exact opposite of what it says?

Sorry that this sucks for you, but since it could've been easily avoided by you having the presence of mind not to tell people to "fuck off and die", I cannot side with you here. Consider this a wake up call. If you want to hang out in spaces where arguing like an angry middle schooler is not acceptable, you're going to modify your behavior accordingly. You're also going to have to accept personal accountability for the words that come out of your mouth. Best of luck, anon.

Easy rule to remember: We do not tell people to kill themselves/die, ever.

End of story.

I'm not here to validate assholes. So please kindly fuck off and die.

You're kind of a hypocrite there don't you think?

No they weren't being oversensitive. Yes you were being an asshole. Learn and asshole no more, young voyager.

I think the majority of people would interpret it the way you intended, as a brush-off. A strong one, but not intending any actual harm.

That said, I do think it's within the mod's prerogative to intervene on grounds of a bullying policy. I don't know about a permanent ban, but yeah, it's a legitimate time to get involved. It also depends on the context-- a discussion of ship wars is weighted differently than a discussion about depression, for example.

I would see "fuck off and die" similar to "go to hell" minus the hell. Not necessarily for them to commit suicide, but for them to go forever away from the speaker in some way.

Of course it all depends on context and how casually it's thrown in. "Oh another one of you people who think anyone who likes this movie is an MRA, fuck off and die" is not the same as "I seriously think that you in particular, personally, are worthless and the world would be better off if you fucked off and died and left us all to be happier, so please go do that" you know?

Agreed. It's a nasty thing to say, but it's still more on the order of "go to hell" than "go kill yourself."

I don't interpret "die" as "kill yourself." I'm sensitive about the latter comment, because I do have suicidal moods (I don't usually talk to people on the internet during them, though...) but I thought everyone knew "die" is just a figure of speech.

Re: So I was an asshole on the internet

(Anonymous) 2015-02-09 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
...How else were they supposed to interpret "die"?

As any other of the many methods of death?

Die is a different word than Suicide.

You can tell because it's spelled slightly different.

You broke the rules, it's really that simple. If you can't have a discussion without resorting to "fuck off and die" it's completely up to the mods whether they want you there or not.

It's okay if some discussions make you a bit heated, but you might want to work on the language you use in response to someone you disagree with because you're likely to get banned in a lot of places for that.

This. Hell, I watched a discussion on another secret community nearly run off the rails because the original poster in that thread started to call someone a bitch (among other colorful nouns and adjectives) because she didn't agree with the other person's assessment of her skills/talent.

This. Debating about whether or not the mods were justified or just using an excuse is being rather obtuse about the point. If you can't conduct your discussions (even heated ones!) without this phrase then of course you're going to get banned for it sooner or later.

They're an oversensitive idiot with the reading comprehension of a stunned hamster. "Fuck off and die" in no way means the same thing as "go kill yourself" or any of its variations. (It also isn't a threat, for fuck's sake.)

If that was the mod's sole reason for banning you, then the mod was being a dick. It wasn't a nice thing to say, but by itself, it hardly constituted "bullying".

Figures of speech are a thing, people need to realize this.

Yeah, you were being an asshole, and also kind of childish. However, you've got to be a pretty special snowflake to assume that "fuck off and die" means "go kill yourself already," and this is coming from someone who has actually been suicidal. However again, the internet is full of special snowflakes. Also, depending on what was going on in the thread, that might have been the last straw.

TL;DR: The mod may have been a little sensitive, but was within bounds. Unable to determine level of sensitivity without more context.

I don't see it literally, but I do think you suck at replying to people on the internet you disagree with and are probably easy to bait into responding with further lame anger problems.

If you were a decent mod trying to keep your whatever a place for discussion, would you really vouch for playground nonsense?
