My cousin is getting a hedgehog for her 18th birthday. The rest of the family is looking forward to it, but I'm over in my little corner thinking that she is going to end up killing that poor hedgie.

She is planning on using a clear tote box with chicken wire zip-tied to the lid. She is going to keep it on the floor. She has a Cairn terrier and two cats. Her house doesn't have heat either- they have to make due with space heaters or a fire in the chimney.

That's awful. So many people don't know how to care for hedgehogs and get one just because they're cute and they see fun pictures of them on the internet. Some people don't even know how to trim their claws and let them grow so wild that they get infected :(

Maybe you can send her some pamphlets or links about proper hedgehog care? If she truly wants to be a good pet owner, then I don't think she would be offended

I've tried. I was thinking about getting one so I researched how to care for them, and ended up deciding they weren't the pet for me.
Any time I try to tell her stuff, she tells me to shut up- that I don't know what I'm talking about and I'm just jealous.
The breeder she is getting it from seems super sketchy to me. The guy and his wife sit out at the huge flea market in our state's fairgrounds. He's not listed in any of the hedgehog breeder lists. They're asking for $100 for a baby hedgehog. They told her she could pick the baby up when it was a month old. I tried telling her that they needed to be with their mothers for at least two months, but again, she told me to shut it. When she went to the market over the weekend, they told her that she'll have to pick it up later because he gave one from the litter hers is supposed to be from to someone the week before and the person called them saying the hedgehog died. Shouldn't someone that was a reputable breeder know off the bat that they need to stay with their mothers longer? The guy texts her pictures of the babies and the box they are in is really gross looking with poop everywhere. I'd keep it as clean as possible.

What's the usual care set up for a hedgehog? They sound uber fragile :(

Ugh, your cousin sounds like an immature brat and the breeders sound even worse. I understand your frustration with the situation
