It's also odd when people speak of Thoreau as living in the wilderness. I only read bits of his stuff, and that was about 20 years ago now, but I went to Walden Pond for a geology class field trip once and it's only about a mile and a half from the center of Concord. He was literally just outside of town.

Well, it was less "living in the middle of nowhere" and more "living without modern conveniences," but honestly, a lot of it boiled down to Thoreau being broke because he didn't want to get a regular job.
