I'm conflicted. On the one hand, you sound like a holier-than-thou douche. On the other, so few people appreciate the fact that Thoreau was a total mooch. It's really easy to advocate "living off the land" when you're living rent-free on someone else's property and being fed by the neighbors. I'd say he was more of a proto-hipster than a proto-neckbeard, though. So, over all, this secret is more of a miss than a hit.

It's also odd when people speak of Thoreau as living in the wilderness. I only read bits of his stuff, and that was about 20 years ago now, but I went to Walden Pond for a geology class field trip once and it's only about a mile and a half from the center of Concord. He was literally just outside of town.

Well, it was less "living in the middle of nowhere" and more "living without modern conveniences," but honestly, a lot of it boiled down to Thoreau being broke because he didn't want to get a regular job.
