I never saw thge movie, but I read the book about 15 years back. I didn't get"spoiled rich brat" but rather "idiot," "pretentious," and "full of himself." He wrote journal entries where he referred to himself in the third person and got really dramatic about his "triumphs." He traveled around a bunch before going to Alaska and was already doing stupid and/or risky things during that time. He had some survival skills and figured he could take care of himself but his skills were for completely different environments and it didn't occur to him that he should consult with people who know how to survive in Alaska specifically before going there because he thought he was just so awesome. The guy who dropped him off said he wasn't dressed appropriately and even gave the guy a sandwhich because he hadn't brought food. I'm sorry he's dead but he was a total idiot.

Everyone shoukd watch Alone in the Wilderness. THAT is how you move to fucking Alaska.
