Ran an errand and played a ton of System Shock, the original. (Almost done with it, then it's on to the sequel.)

Also got into an argument about Kanye West (namely the whole thing about Beck) which has led me to revisit 808s and Heartbreak, which is still really good.

Ah, System Shock <3 System Shock 2 is my jam, that's one of my favorite games of all time.

I've fallen out of love with it, personally; it's a good game but there's a lot of stuff in it that irritates me now. (Oddly enough, System Shock 1 still doesn't...) I find Bioshock to be the much better game.

Hm, if you don't mind my asking, what irritates you about it? Bioshock's awesome too, but I really missed the feeling of absolute tension and dread that it just couldn't quite get going.

Certain gameplay elements like inventory Tetris (which I hate, it's one of the hugest sins a game can commit IMO) and flow-destroying stuff like the chemical room/research thing. It doesn't really hold up as well as it used to. Bioshock is more slick and polished but it does away with a lot of the stuff I simply don't have time for anymore.

Fair enough, and I actually totally agree on the inventory issue. I suppose I got used to it, so it's not too big a detriment to me...I think just, overall, the atmosphere of System Shock 2 appeals to me a lot more than Bioshock's. Which, again, isn't to say by any means that it's bad, I just feel like it was striving for some things that it couldn't quite achieve.

Yeah my issue with SS2's atmosphere is it's kind of bog-standard 90s sci-fi innit? It doesn't even have the Aggressive Retro 70s charm of Alien: Isolation (aka System Shock 3) nor the adorable dogged insistence on being as 80s cyberpunk as possible like System Shock 1. (Fun fact: SS1 and to a lesser extent Deus Ex filled in a lot of the visual blanks for me when I first read Neuromancer.)

At least Bioshock was doing something somewhat original with its exclectic mix of art deco orgy and isolated, gloomy undersea location.
