Image: The Wikipedia article detailing Anette Olzon's dismissal from the band Nightwish. The following text is visible:

this has led to a division from which we cannot recover".[71] This announcement came days after Olzon fell ill and was unable to perform; Nightwish used replacement singers from the opening band, Kamelot, and Olzon later expressed her disappointment, saying "I was never asked if it was OK that they used Elize and Alissa in the show [Friday] night [...] I don’t think it’s a good decision they made and I’m sorry for those of you who came to see the whole band but got something else. But I was very ill and this decision wasn’t mine."[72] According to the statement, Floor Jansen (ex-After Forever, ReVamp) will sing for the remainder of the Imaginaerum World Tour.

On January 11, 2013, Olzon announced on her official blog that she was pregnant with her third child, due in spring 2013. This was a contributing factor to her being dismissed.[73] The band then released a statement on their website declaring that the reason Olzon gave for her dismissal and other statements she made were untrue and that Olzon herself had agreed to help find a replacement while she was on maternity leave.[74] Later on, Olzon gave several interviews in which she told that she never agreed with a replacement, even when she was pregnant, and proposed to the band to postpone the tour, culminating on her firing. She also added that she was against Jansen joining the band in her period of maternity, mainly because the difference of their vocal styles.[75]

Secret Text: After reading how it went down with Anette, I'm starting to wonder if Tarja herself wasn't the problem back then, like they said.

I don't want to think about these things. I just want to enjoy my silly symphonic metal songs. :(

Man, I remember when that whole thing went down. Ugly business, really.

Heh. I wrote that section of the Wiki.

Anette turned out to be a nasty piece of work herself - she told bands not to go to Greece and publicly announced that she had hated touring there, she liked an anti-Floor page... There are stories that she and Tuomas used to get into quite a few squabbles as well and Tuomas apparently had to be dragged back to his trailer after getting roaring drunk.

Then Floor went and revealed the group had been planning to kick Anette out beforehand and replace her with Floor. What.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
You're probably right. Most likely both sides are equally guilty of what the other party accused them off, and perhaps it was mostly the guys that were shitty to Tarja, seeing how there's a bit of a trend there. I actually worry about Floor a bit. I don't want to see her hurt by this. Or Elize if they ever use her again. Or any of the others. :/

I still like the music though (the ones with Tarja, haven't really listened to anything after Dark Passion Play to be honest) and I hope it doesn't completely ruin your enjoyment of something you once loved.

Floor will be okay. Out of all the NW female vocalists, she's the one who can handle herself in the metal scene and deal with smelly dudes and hard life on the road. She's been doing that since she was 16 and it's her true passion. Tarja's always lay more in the classical music, and Anette likely just wanted to live the rock star dream (there's plenty of evidence she treated her position in the band as just another, if lucrative, job and was never really into metal).
Floor is also a formidable lady who's not afraid to speak her mind but can also do compromises. She'll be fine, she fits in.

Frankly? Anette is a lying liar who lies.

The situation all in all was ugly and complicated. Anette was pregnant and had been hiding it for a while, which is an utterly stupid thing when you're in the middle of a huge world tour that had already been taxing on her health. The tour was also at a point where cancelling or postponing the rest of it would have been disastrous (let's remember it's not just the guys but the stagehands, promotors, venue staff etc. etc. it would have affected) so some solution had to be found. Anette has admitted she initially agreed to a temporary replacement, but when Floor's name came up she tried to back off from the plan because she was (justifiably) afraid Floor would outshine her, leading to the heavy arguments that eventually led to her departure.

Now, I completely support any woman's decision to have or not to have babies whenever they feel like it. But in music business and show business overall? Getting pregnant in the middle of a tour/production/etc. (especially when you've been known to have health problems anyway) is not a smart thing to do. In most cases? You *will* be replaced until you're able to resume your duties. Anette was always a little naive when it came to the realities of the job and the business she entered, and if she thought canceling the tour right in the middle of it was ever an option, she definitely didn't think things through. And she obviously wouldn't have been able to do the South American and Australian tour legs in her condition.

So yeah, maybe the guys did some decisions behind her back as well, but they too were in a spectacularly shitty situation. If Floor hadn't been available, the whole thing would have crashed and burned.

In the case of Tarja, it's been said (and take this with a good heaping of salt) that the firing was partially due to Tuomas' jealousy towards and dislike of the man she married because he had been in love with her, claiming that he "changed" her, that he was manipulative, etc. (this is basically what the song "Master Passion Greed" was about). How much of that is true...eh, no one really knows, because each side will tell you a different thing.

And as was already said, Anette left/was let go because of her becoming pregnant during the tour, and while I believe it should be left up to a woman when to go through with a pregnancy, I do question the wisdom of doing this while in the midst of a long worldwide tour. Regardless, the situations were completely different, and I'm not sure that they can be compared.

Both departures saddened me when they first happened, because I've been a huge Nightwish fan since 2002, but I learned to live with it, and I have favorite songs from both of those eras. I think Floor will be fine, having already spent plenty of time in the metal scene, and I'm more than certain that this new era will generate some more favorites for me.

Did she get pregnant on purpose during the tour or was it unplanned? If the former then yeah, her timing sucks. If the latter, accidents happened. Was she expected to be celibate during the tour?

Wow, this kind of makes me glad that all the symphonic metal bands I listen to are either solo acts or have no public drama.

...this is why I don't post some of my secrets. :(

I know enough of you that, while I can't say exactly who posted this one, I'm pretty sure it's possible to narrow it down. I have my own very particular fandoms, and I don't like posting a secret that will obviously be me.

If I'd never posted here, I could post one. And no one in the community would even know what I was talking about. :(

Then again, apparently there are more than three symphonic metal fans posting in this thread. So I may be wrong.

OP

Pretty sure I don't know you, nonnie! I've never talked about anything regarding Nightwish and/or Metal online.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-12 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I miss Tarja, a lot. I will not miss Anette, though she finally started to mesh with the band on Imaginaerum, which is a fantastic album. Floor is a powerhouse and I can't wait to hear what she sounds like with the band!

(Anonymous) 2015-02-12 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Floor Jansen is working with Nightwish now? I did not know that. :/ She's way too good for them.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-12 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of the band's problems have to do with Tuomas. He's the one who wanted to kick Tarja out because he thought she was a diva (and then wrote multiple petulant songs directed towards her and her husband until she released "Enough"), then he and Anette reportedly had strife as well (although this one's mostly on Anette - she's quite a piece of work).

If he tries anything with Floor, though, she'll kick his ass.

I've never met Tarja in person and don't know much about what went down (or if the bit I know is true). About that diva thing, though - my colleague works security on concerts, and he told me Nightwish was a nightmare to work for, because Tarja was a diva of epic proportions. And he's the most laid back, laissez-faire guy I know, so I was quite surprised about this opinion.

This is one of those times I'm happy that I just listen to music and don't really follow the artists' personal lives. (Same thing with other media too. I just...don't really care, and so many good things could have been ruined by an association I don't even need to know about.)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-12 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
I can tell why this is a secret - back when Tarja was kicked it was impossible to question the band's methods and reasons without getting flamed :(

(Anonymous) 2015-02-12 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
it still is in a lot of places -_-

I honestly wouldn't care about the drama, or whose fault it was, if I wasn't so disappointed with the live performances. I've seen all three of them live now (Tarja, Anette & Floor), and that's it, I'm done with Nightwish live. I'll stick to buying the CDs.

I know the band thinks people want to hear all their old favourites, and I'm sure many fans do - but for me it kinda hurts to hear them sung in the "wrong" voice.
When I first heard Anette sing Tarja's songs, I cringed so hard, but I was perfectly fine when she sang her own. Then last year, hearing Floor sing both Anette's and Tarja's songs, it was even worse. I barely made it through the concert. That's of course my problem, and not everybody is so hung up about a voice, but I really really wish they wouldn't do that.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the release of Endless Forms Most Beautiful, and hearing Floor sing her "own" songs then.

I refuse to believe that what happened was entirely Tarja's fault. Tuomas is to blame, too. I don't understand how there are still people who don't get that after what happened with Anette.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-12 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah been wondering the same :( i still miss tarja
