So either the movie listings are glitched somehow, or Fifty Shades of Poorly-Written Abusive Bullshit Marketed as Healthy BDSM is literally the only thing playing in the movie theater near me this entire weekend. For one, wow. For two, how is the movie even related to the holiday? Can people still not differentiate between sex (which 50 Shades is supposed to be about) and romance (which Valentine's Day is supposed to be about)? And for three, wow. Terrible move, cinema.

I have some spare time coming up and I kind of wanted to go see a movie or two, but that one was never remotely under consideration. Sigh.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think they're selling it as a romance thing

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Even if it were a decent romantic movie, they shouldn't stop playing everything else. I mean, holy shit. They don't even do that for Christmas.

My mother told me (I have not sen the news) the movie is apparently sold out here in Valentine's Day already, and the showed screeching girls on TV. Strange, because I always associated it more with middle aged women.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
...Jesus. The one near me is at least running a crapton of showings of the Spongebob movie.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm hoping it's just a weird bug in the listing and that they haven't actually put all their eggs in one awful basket.

I almost want to buy tickets to the Spongebob movie to try to counteract the 50 Shades of WTF nonsense.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I am so sick of people complaining about 50 Shades. Tumblr is all, "Don't go watch it, it is abuse!!!!" As if any of those idiots on Tumblr were going to see it in the first place. And middle aged women don't care about whether it is abuse or not. It is a porn fantasy. There is erotica about dinosaurs fucking women.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the dinosaur ones are about dinosaurs fucking men.

Honestly, I was staying out of the complaining until this.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, but I think a lot of the complaining comes from the fact that it's so popular, and is normalizing the consent-issues 'bdsm' as something that women want.

I think it's stupid that they're saying it's sad that 50 Shades is being advertised where children can see the posters. Because nothing says "Hey kids, abuse is fun and awesome!" like a picture of a man in a suit looking at the Seattle skyline.

"And middle aged women don't care about whether it is abuse or not."

Because if you're female, you can't care about whether or not something is abuse after a certain age? Great to know that, as a woman who isn't exactly young.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
It is literally advertised as a fucking BDSM how-to. There is a line of sex toys with its logo. The author literally calls any abuse victims that call her male character abusive "witches" and "trolls" and whines about how it shouldn't be compared to abuse because ~that's a disservice to real victims of abuse~.

At least the storylines about dinosaurs fucking people, you know, outright admit they're fucking fantasy and don't bill themselves as anything but.

It's pearl-clutching disguised as social justice. Same damn thing happened when the Twilight movies came out, and you'll notice that there wasn't in fact a rash of girls dying in abusive relationships after they all went to see it.

I mean, for fuck's sake, you all claim to be feminists and then completely remove women's agency. You think women can't watch this movie without suddenly being brainwashed into an abusive BDSM situation? What the fuck is wrong with you?

Agreed in the sense that Tumblr needs to shut the fuck up about it. It isn't even their demographic in the first place.

Tumblr whining about things that aren't in their demographic and they're "DEFINITELY NEVER GOING TO SEE!", then patting themselves on the back like a job well done when the movie bombs pisses me off. Tumblr is not the media hub of the world and is a small blip of consumers, they don't have that kind of 'power' to gloat about.

They are not doing that here, thankfully. My V-Day plans involve going by my lonesome to see Kingsmen. Much better movie choice I feel.

Although, can't V-Day be about sex too? 50 Shades is bad sex, so I wouldn't recommend it just because it includes abuse and rape. But I don't think there really is a strict line between sex and romance. For some people sex is romance. Personally, I hate the stuff typically called "romance," and if I were currently dating I'd say V-Day could totally be about sex.

Honestly, it hasn't been about romance for a long time now. Valentine's Day is pretty much a thinly veiled reason to have sex.

And you would be surprised by the amount of people who CAN'T seem to differentiate between sex and romance.

IDK why they'd stop playing every other movie in the theatre, though. From all accounts I've read it really isn't good quality enough to warrant that treatment.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I feel sorry for all the boyfriends getting dragged to see this on Valentine's day.

There are a lot of ads for it on the radio and TV right now. Luckily, I can change the channel.

I guess I figured it would be popular but I had hoped it wouldn't be.

Romance isn't actually required to be healthy or well-written, it only has to be about people falling in love, which the 50 Shades characters end up doing. They get married and have babies, for gods' sake. It's a very traditional story dressed up as kinky. "Rich, highly sexed alpha asshole awakens naive virgin" is so old it farts dust. Erotic Romance is a known category of the romance genre where the sex is a huge part of the story, and sex and romance are very intimately tied together for many, many people. I haven't seen Valentine's Day presented as chastely romantic since grade school, honestly.

I hate the books, but I almost hope the movie will be a success because the two main leads HATE working on it and I just want their displeasure to seep out onto the screen.

Yes, I am a terrible person.

Sex and romance aren't mutually exclusive.

...actually, though, this is another point against the "you have to have sex to be in a romantic relationship" crowd, isn't it? Once again, someone says sex and romance are separate, and they're even annoyed by them being confused. C'mon guys, doesn't romance REQUIRE sex?

I work in a library. I overheard a teenage boy say he wanted to read 50 Shades of Grey.

His reason was that all the girls at his school were talking about how they loved Christian Grey and wanted a boyfriend like him. He said he wanted to read the book to find out how to be like Christian Grey.

That is what is terrifying me about this book and others (Twilight). They are romanticizing unhealthy relationships.
