This gif and the comment you replied to are the reason I love Batman. When he's written right, he's SO AWESOME. Like, just perfection. (Unfortunately he's an easy character to write as lazily manpain-y.)

Yes! It's why I enjoyed JLU and BTAS--people make fun of Batman. And Batman sometimes makes fun of other people! You get to see Batman turned into a prepubescent boy (and be SO ANNOYED about it), and Batman troll Harley Quinn, and Batman totally fail at getting a good birthday present for Superman.

THAT is a Batman I can enjoy!

na

The Batman Adventures comic series was pretty good too (it tied in to BTAS and kept the spirit of it although it occasionally included some more mature themes since the medium lent itself better to it than a children targeted show. It lasted for over 10 years)

What are JLU and BTAS? Are they the cartoons where (going off a tumblr gifset) batman helps out a ?villian? ?young girl? ?on a swing? and also ?Harley? over a bad day?

(All the ? because I've not looked much into batman/supermanverse. Between the two, such boring turn-offs for me)

If they're such boring turnoffs, why are you asking?

Because from the gifs it looks like those particular universes don't do all the stuff that turns me off in the first place and Rogan's description is way more appealing than all the Batmans I've seen so far.

BTAS is Batman: The Animated Series, and JLU is Justice League Unlimited. They're cartoons which take place in the same universe which ran in the US from the early nineties till the mid '00s.

The young girl on the swing is from one of the last JLU episodes and is very sad. The Harley's bad day is from BTAS and is also pretty fun.

Both cartoons are really good, but have different moods. BTAS is very much a film noir-ish style, and for the first three seasons, Batman actually isn't that broody; he smiles, cracks jokes, and the action is a lot less sleek and streamlined than in JLU. It feels more down-to-earth.

JLU on the other hand, is much sleeker in aesthetic. Everything is more classically superheroic, in part because you have a lot of people running around with powers. (BTAS, the power level is pretty low, and Batman especially at the beginning moves and fights the way you would imagine a very well-trained but still ordinary human would.) JLU has a huge ensemble cast, which makes it very easy to avoid characters you don't like. We enjoy it because you get a lot of D-listers getting episodes to themselves and such.

BTAS is four seasons, and JLU is two, so not too long. Worth a check out!

Yessssss. JLU and BTAS Batman are my favourite Batman. Also Lego Batman is a good contender for this too because he tries to do the whole brooding thing and the other characters basically make fun of him for it(not in a mean spirited way but how they react to his brooding, it's great).

I actually watched BTAS in full AFTER JLU. (We saw some of it when it originally ran, but man, that was like twenty years ago!) It was really interesting seeing how the style and mood changed between the two shows, even though it was based off the same designs and characters.

I caught BTAS first since it aired when I was growing up but I agree, it's definitely more noir-ish than JLU, which isn't a problem because it works nicely for the series and I think it's where my love of Batman stemmed from. And then JLU happened and I loved the shit out of that, all the superheroes, all the time. And while Bats was still a bit broody I felt that they balanced him out with some humour too.

Totally. One of my favorite Batman parts of JLU are when he and Wonder Woman are going to give Superman birthday presents.

Wonder Woman: Bruce! You didn't get him a GIFT CARD, did you?

Batman: *defensively* No! ...cash.
