Dumb reviews

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I really hate this sort of review on biographies or non-fiction books on Amazon:

"This book was well-written, but I can only give it one star because the subject wasn't worth writing about."

So why the eff did you read a whole damn book about it, then?!

My unfavorite is the ones from high school kids who do nothing but say "i had to read this for school and it sucked".

I hate the ones who rate the product one star on Amazon, because there was something wrong with the order itself (it didn't come, it came slow, packaging was damaged, etc).

+10000000

I was going to say the same thing. I look at the one-stars on products and so many of them mark down the product because of shipping issues. There's a rating system for shipping for that. I wish more people would realize that.

I was going to say this, too!

Word. I start flagging them all as unhelpful.

Yeah, it makes sense for electrical equipment, but not for books or movies.

I hate it when people read an autobiography or other non-fiction book about/by a celebrity they clearly already hate, then go on to bitch about it. Like, what did you expect.

Also when people who usually only read litfic/classics/experimental fiction choose a more "lightweight" book, eg a thriller or a crime novel, and then trash it. I see this happening a lot on Goodreads and people obviously do it just so they get lots of likes for the review from all their pretentious friends. I don't have a problem with genuine negative reviews, but these people clearly knew from the start they wouldn't enjoy the book. It's so obnoxious.

Yelp

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Fucking Yelp. People will rate places negatively for things that are so arbitrary or irrelevant. It is so frustrating to read sometimes.

The worst is when someone rates a place one-star because they didn't like the service at a place, and then tell a story where they come off as so unreasonable that I can only applaud the restaurant for not giving into them. Bah. Yelpers.

I saw something similar on Trip Advisor. All the negative ratings for an art museum were clearly from people who had never been to an art museum before and didn't like art.

"All they have are pictures on the wall." "It's all modern stuff." "It's boring."

Like, why did you even go?

Or people who criticize food for being too spicy.

DON'T ORDER SPICY FOOD THEN

Re: Yelp

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt - Haha, those people. I have a feeling they secretly think that the heat level they can tolerate is the "right" heat level, so anything beyond that is WAY TOO SPICY FOR MANKIND AND HOW DARE YOU.

Re: Yelp

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
DA - If they just say "too spicy," then I probably agree with you. I think that sometimes "too spicy" can also mean "wrong spicy" though. Like, I've been to restaurants where the chef obviously realized that a certain dish was supposed to be spicy, so they threw a bunch of cayenne in at the last minute. Which might work for some things, but leaves other dishes tasting bland but hot, if that makes sense, and that's just obnoxious. I like spicy food, but I want it to taste like spicy food, not like cafeteria fare that makes my mouth burn.

Ones that rate the book on morality instead of quality. "This book is about a murderer and murder is bad, one star." Worse is when their morality extends to things like queerness or religions that aren't theirs. Gay character who isn't there to be a moral about how being gay is bad? One star.

There's this obnoxious but kinda funny contingent of romance reviewers that hates anything with sex in it but won't stick to the Christian or "clean" stuff for whatever reason and insists on being scandalized by mainstream romance novels, which any doofus knows tend to feature sex scenes. They'll buy books clearly described as "steamy," "hot," "sexy," "erotic romance," etc., with suggestive covers, and get hopping mad when the characters mysteriously start fucking, lol. Some of them will give one star to books they haven't even read just to complain about a mention of sexual content in the blurb. There are lists and other resources all over the place, even right there on Amazon itself, to help them find books that aren't objectionable to them, but it's more fun to be offended by completely ordinary things than to do a bunch of ickypoo research or deal with the fact that the world doesn't revolve around your personal tastes.

Re: Dumb reviews

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, I know. A friend of mine writes romance and she runs into this all the time. People react like she's the devil for writing a book with (*le gasp!*) sex scenes even when it's clearly marketed as romance and not, say, Christian inspirational romance. I don't believe their outrage is genuine for a second. Clearly they want to read dirty books like the rest of the audience, but they're in deep denial.

Friend says that if the reviewer is vocal, she usually gets a slight sales boost out of it. ;)

Also the ones where it's obvious they got one of those "how would you rate [items]" emails from Amazon and somehow read it as a demand. "Why are you telling me to review this, I haven't read it yet?" lol.

Re: Dumb reviews

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
The ones that are like: "I hated this book and it sucked and there's so many problems with it... so I'm giving it 4 stars!"

Now there's a disproportionate number of shitty books on Goodread that have really good ratings, thus making their whole rating system moot.
