Yours also sounds a bit larger than mine was, so there's more people to balance out stronger personalities :p.
Yeah my group's was a sad situation, but I am still in contact with several of the people so if I have Important Writing Conundrums, I can just contact them directly to get input.

How does one properly fauntle?

Fandom Expert

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
What fandom do you feel you are an expert in?

How much of an expert are you? Read all the supplemental material? Seen all the episodes? Talked with the creators themselves? Memorized the book?

If you're close to being an expert, what more do you have to learn and are you on your way?

I completely get it.

That you don't notice it sooner suggests that their narrative isn't very linear (or doesn't have the traditional "setup-elaboration-punchline").

If you're enjoying the strips, then I suppose it doesn't much matter.

Same. I can't take the characters seriously if they call it that.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
For one, avoid fauntling minors.

Try finding a writing group, or take a writing class - I'll warn you it sometimes takes a while, it took me years to find a good group (albeit without looking as hard as I could've been), and while I liked my classes, some of them were more "this is how you should write."

It's definitely a bit jarring when you get to the real world, though.

It might be an unpopular thing to say, but you might not enjoy JKR's writing. Her world building is great! Her storytelling is good. But she's not a fantastic writer.

God he looks good in Sleepy Hollow. The long hair and the beard suit him. Unf.

Whether you're happily indulging in it, hating it because you're single, hating it because it's commercialized madness, or using it as an excuse to eat chocolate but otherwise don't gaf about the holiday, I hope everyone's having a great Valentine's Day! What are your plans for the day?

(I hope I made it clear that having super fluffy romantic plans and having zero plans and having plans to deliberately undermine the holiday are all equally valid options!)

Apparently, Tolkien used the word "faunt" to describe hobbit toddlers in one of his Letters, and fandom made fauntling out of that to describe all kids (dwarves and hobbits, maybe elves too). I'd rather they just called them toddlers.

I'm the same and I also got into the habit of opening books in the last page only to remember belatedly it's a book, not a manga.

I've had writer's block for fic for over a year and I still don't work on my original stuff like I should :/

OP, this has been one of my pet peeves forever too. I'm so glad to see others annoyed by it.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much this. If it were along similar lines I might be interested, but even then, I'd be worried they were too much like Harry Potter. (Since I've found some authors basically just recycle characters and so forth.)

You really have to make sure your wrist action is working properly. It's hard to describe, I could show you if I had a video camera. It's also crucial to make sure all your equipment and ingredients are high-quality and in proper working order. Remember, prior preparation prevents piss-poor fauntling.

MCU. Supernatural up to Season 8. The Walking Dead TV show (and some comics). Mostly consuming all the media, reading meta, and being all up in the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not defending this person, don't get me wrong, just remarking that it could also be a lack of self-awareness/basic conversational skills more so than narcissism. Some people mean well but are utterly clueless. It's still annoying though, and does indeed make them hard to be around. :/ I'm glad the rest of the experience is good though!

Star Wars prequels (just the films though)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, is that a thing in fic? Huh. Either it's new or it's just been way too long since I've read HP fic. But yeah, DADA in meta is one thing; in canon, however, it's Defense, or sometimes, IIRC, they'll even just skip to "in Lupin's class" or "I have Lockhart today" or whatever? I might be wrong about the last bit though.

I also nominate you for expert in Steve!whump fan fiction.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Shame, I really liked the books. Casual Vacancy less then the other two. It's a bit too British for me. But J. K. Rowlings way of writing characters works really well with the whole detective genre. Since you have to make up a whole cast of characters for each book memorable and recognisable characters are pretty important.

If you don't want to read you don't have to. But I would recomend then to every fan of the genre even if they aren't Harry Potter fans.

Tolkien. I haven't read all of HoME but I've read a lot of it, and a bunch of scholarly external stuff too.

I don't know Elvish yet but I know what I don't know, if that makes sense, and I hope to learn it someday.

Re: Fandom Expert

I don't think there's any fandom out there where I can't think of quite a few people who know massively more than I do.

However that might be in part because I tend to gravitate towards fandoms that spend a lot of time on meta and theorizing and all of those things.
