What are your least favorite things to talk about in fandom?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-17 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Opposite of above.

What are the things that you don't like to talk about in your fandoms?

Any particular reason you don't like it?

Anti-shipping. LET PEOPLE SHIP WHAT THEY WANT!

Real life politics and social justice issues. Yes, they are important, but I come to fandom in order to forget those things for a while.

Oh yes! And it is so hard to avoid on Tumblr (where I get most of fandom interaction). No, I don't care about the affect of Castiel/Dean on how homosexuality is portrayed on TV. Give me pretty GIFs of Dean and Castiel.

I don't have a tumblr, so I'm curious, how hard would it be to build a dashboard 100% free of social justice-related stuff? Is that sort of talk really so common that all users post about it? If so... That's rather impressive, not gonna lie. It's hard to find people irl who care at all.

Destiel fandom is rather ridiculous with their need to make it canon (or at least it was when I still followed them) and the constant bitching about the showrunners. That was one of the reasons I stepped out of the SPN fandom.

Ugh I agree on this. I hate when it's obvious, no I'm reading fanfic so I can escape the real world please leave it out of fandoms when the fandom doesn't interact in that world.

Re: What are your least favorite things to talk about in fandom?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-17 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
One could argue they are in the fics because the writers are also escaping the real world where these things are not acknowledged, so they explore it in fandom instead?

Ditto.

What's worse is that it seems to be in EVERY FANDOM, no matter the fandom's genre. Can't I just make a nest in my humor fandom and ignore the real world for once, please?

What the actors do outside of their roles. Like casually. Their normal lives. I don't care that so and so went to Jamba Juice and wears crocs. Now if it's an interview or a podcast where they talk about their works, sure. But like some of the Supernatural fandom caring a bit too much about the actors' children? Leave me out of that borderline creepy stuff.

+1

I'd rather keep the actors and the characters separate. I also have no interest whatsoever in "they play a couple so the actors would make a great couple, too" talk.

Same. I couldn't care less about celebrities.

I enjoy reading about off-screen antics that are obviously staged to play to the fans, but not their actual private personal lives. Give the poor actors some space, people.

(In defense of West Collins fans, Misha does put him rather prominently on display. But again, that's stuff he's chosen to share at his own discretion--presumably with Vicki's support, as she's often the one holding the camera--not fans sneaking in under the fence to snap unauthorized photos in the dead of night. Jensen and Danneel, on the other hand, are extremely protective of JJ, and people should respect that.)

Ship wars or ship hate/anti-shipping of any kind. Like I've got ships I don't like but the last thing that I am about to do is be rude or nasty to the people that ship them. Let them have their fun.

And to some extent social justice, not because I don't care, I do. But I see enough bad stuff on the news every day, fandom is where I go to get away from the real world for a while.

I think it's interesting that people equate social justice with bad stuff. I like hearing about it, but I spend just as much time talking about and looking at things that do it well as I do focusing on the stuff that got it wrong. I talked about stuff like representation and real world issues in my last post in a What Are You Reading? thread on another site I frequent but it was all happy gushing.

Anything specific relating to the author/cast/crew/creators in general. I mean, I'm fine with a certain amount of context for the work, but specific details of any of those people's lives or opinions or RL actions outside their work is a no-go area for me. I don't care, and I don't want to know. I'm here for the fictional people, not the real ones.

"problematic things". Shoo. I go to fandom to not have to deal with real life shit.

People who have headcanons that are in conflict with the establish canons -- especially if they insist that their headcanons could actually be canon.

Like, if you want your character to be some kind of social justice avatar but you acknowledge that the main canon is about as white bread as can be, that's cool.

But if you insist that a character who is established as doing one thing in canon (maybe taking part in a battle or something) and insist that they were actually doing something else at that time, that shit bugs me.

Shipping.

I'm not going to slam people for shipping, or go piss on their parade in their own space, but the number of people who will take over any conversation about any aspect of canon in order to talk about their ships instead is incredibly irritating.

I was wondering when this was going to come up. I feel like there are quite a few people here who don't ship/are sick of shipping. I'm surprised it wasn't the first thing mentioned.

Anti-shipping and, to an extent, social issues.

Social Issues is an important topic, but sometimes fandom gets too weird about it and they end up nitpicking something that, ultimately, isn't anywhere near as problematic as they make it to be.

Why breakout character/juggernaut ship/popular new plot development actually sucks and only stupid people like it. Like, I get that there's something else that you'd rather see, but instead of tearing down what other people like, why don't you explain what's so cool about your favorite?

Almost every TV show or movie I love has one actor and/or character I can't stand.
