Fibromyalgia

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone here have it, and can tell me what it's like?
I'm always sore (especially around the neck, arms, and back) and am constantly fatigued. I think I might have it, but I also don't think I fit the symptoms exactly. I was wondering if hearing personal experiences of it might give me a better idea of what having it is like.

Unfortunately, there's not really a "what it's like" when it comes to fibromyalgia. That's because this diagnosis is often used like a catch-all term for pain and fatigue that is unexplained but chronic to the point of requiring pain management, often with narcotic interventions.

If you have chronic pain and fatigue the reality is it could be caused by any number of reasons including vitamin or micronutrient deficiencies, degenerative muscle conditions, lack of exercise, or poor sleep due to sleep disturbances (e.g. sleep apnea).

If you haven't already seen your primary care physician about this issue, it might be time to. Especially if your condition has persisted for a number of weeks.

This. I used to have those symptoms, and for me they were the result of anemia. It's far more likely that they're being caused by something like that than by fibromyalgia.

I don't fit the symptoms exactly either but several rheumatologists have shrugged and said "I don't know, probably fibro". I'm pretty similar to you except my pain is in different places. I've got medication to help keep me from sleeping all day but that still doesn't keep me from feeling too tired to move sometimes. I'm wary of going too far in claiming to have experience since I don't know for sure I have it, but then that's just the way the diagnostics go in these cases.

My mom has it in her forearms, but she's also started getting arthritis in her hands and hips. I think the pain in her arms is from an injury to her spinal chord about 20 years ago, which bruised the spinal chord right around where the nerves running into her arms all. There are tons of theories around what might "cause" fibromyalgia, including spinal/neck injuries, but nothing confirmed.

It's kind of like the laryngitis (literally "swelling/inflammation of the larynx") of chronic pain: we know something's wrong 'cause you're in pain/inflamed, so here's a generic term to mean something and get you help.
