*Shot in the dark assumption*

Maybe he reminds some people of their real cranky supremacist racist grandpa/neighbor/uncle??

[personal profile] ex_earthshaker594 2015-02-21 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, most posters I've seen joking about his flaws literally use "racist grandpa" as their descriptor.

da

kinda feels like an excuse, because it's acceptable to overlook it with our older relatives who won't change their ways. "oh grandpa!" we laugh and shake our head.

I'm not sure how it would be excusing a fictional character (unless you mean about the relatives themselves) when the joke is entirely about how he does remind most players of these people in real life. They love them, but it's a very serious personal issue in most cases. People deal with it differently. Although a lot of people seem to have no problem making Vivienne every bad encounter they had in real life by comparison, but eh, not secret-related.

You also can't change Solas very much within the game, though. A possible romance doesn't really alter his core character. He changed an entire civilization because he assumed it would make everything better, and that was just pre-game. It makes for a lot of interesting meta discussion, but if meta always comes off as excusing the character's actions (see: how most Anders conversations seem to go), it might be better to go somewhere else.

I only commented because I saw a thread a day ago using the term, myself!

I don't know if you can call him a "supremacist" when he seems to be caught up on a past that is so past that we don't even know what all races existed and in what forms. He clearly finds there is a lot left to be desired in every culture in modern Thedas, including elven culture. The dwarves used to be something better, the elves were something better. The qunari???? And he doesn't really go that hard against humans, aside from correctly pointing out how much Tevinter has benefited from ransacking and re-appropriating ancient elven culture and how humans tend to be brutish (which, given what we know about how elves are treated by humans, is a fair assessment).

I mean, I find the "racist grandpa" thing to be a little too soft considering how shitty he can be towards those around him, but I feel like he exists in between that and being baldly supremacist.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-21 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think he's more way too wrapped up in a golden past that only exists in his memory than a supremacist. He really looks down on his own race as it is nowadays.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-21 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
That's basically how real world supremacists feel though, isn't it?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-21 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, in a way, yes. They often want to restore a golden age. But they usually have a group of people that they consider true members, right? The ones responsible to restore things. It's not one guy looking down on everyone. Yeah, you can say he thinks the elves of thousands of years ago are superior but since they don't exist anymore and he sees no one today as their heirs, it's a bit weird to say he's a supremacist about an extinct people.

baldly

Heh.

not really related to the secret but man i do NOT like the art for this series, that is one freaky looking guy.
and everyone looks wet and slimy in the pictures I've seen. why's everyone so oily??

(Anonymous) 2015-02-21 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Well I'm oily after a day of work with or without makeup, let alone after fighting demons and dragons in a grueling fantasy world.

But yeah, Solas looks freaky.

Because the shinier the characters are, the easier it is for Bioware to hide their piss-poor texture skills and color theory.

It's a thing with the graphics settings. If you don't have them on max, everything gets SUPER SHINY and weird.

Solas' situation is pretty...unusual, but I do think the word supremacist applies.

I think people should acknowledge that he's an asshole and doesn't have the healthiest view of the world, but a lot of Dragon Age characters are kind of assholes and people still like them, so I don't feel like the love for Solas is anything abnormal.

I haven't seen people saying he's perfect or all his actions and views are justified, but I typically stay to the da tag and don't venture too much into individual character tags. There's always going to be people who ignore the worst parts of their favorite characters, though. (Sadly, I don't think that's ever going to change.)

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-02-21 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
It's Bioware fandom, where people would stan for Charles Manson if he had a good voice actor and declare it to be a social justice issue of religious freedom.

Everyone else says this guy looks weird but I kind of find it appealing in a CGI movie way.

Never played the game

(Anonymous) 2015-02-21 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
But for a split second I thought it was just a picture pf an elf with Nicholas Cage's face photoshopped onto it

Image: Solas from Dragon Age

Text: I wish people would stop with the “he’s a grumpy grandpa” thing when what he really is, a racist supremacist. I’m not saying he shouldn’t find him interesting as a character, but I wish people would stop pretending he’s a good person.

(The only way I’d want a “wolf hunt” DLC is if we can actually kill him at the end, and that’s never gonna happen because it’s clear the ending was a setup for the next game.)

So I've heard.

I haven't played the game but spoilers are candy for me, so I have opinions based on what I do know. Like someone upthread said, every character in Dragon Age has their shitty side.

Also? I dislike Solas' looks.

In an aside, Valandhir and I were discussing him yesterday and she's not far in the game but she already finds him very very suspect, simply based on the fact that he so conveniently knows so much and is so interested in the Inquisitor's mark. I did persuade her that despite his suspect factors he still made a good mage to have for gameplay reasons.

One of the things I hated most about him was how he kills Flemeth and takes her power. I've been waiting the entire series for her to be revealed as the ultimate bad guy and I hate that he's taken that away from her.

That guy looks like an elven Voldemort.
