The Embarrassing Fandom You Love

For those of you who are susceptible to what others think, which fandoms do you love that are frowned upon?

Sherlock. Yeah, they do stupid shit like Tunalock or Bat!John. But I love all that crazy shit.

Did you see the recent New York Times article? I couldn't believe how fun and actually respectful the whole thing was, considering how much pointing-at-and-laughing shippy Sherlock art usually gets in interviews and articles.

I think, in a lot of ways, if people paid attention to Shaw/Root fandom in POI, or if it was a slash fandom, it would catch a lot of shit, because it does have a lot of traits that people seem to object to. I mean it is just full of totally OOC fluff.

But I don't care, I love it.

what's even embarrassing? i don't even know anymore. i read books for ten year olds and write like a fic after every book now. oh, animorphs. you've ruined me for any other fandom.

Sucker Punch

(Anonymous) 2015-02-21 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I love this fucking movie and think it was very misunderstood. I'm not even embarrassed. Pretty women kicking ass and using their imagination to escape a shitty reality? Sign me up!

(Anonymous) 2015-02-21 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I liked it too! I've read a lot of criticism of it for being misogynist but, although I could have done without quite so much objectification, I LOVED seeing an action movie that was just about women.

In general, I have a complicated relationship with anime. The sexism is just different enough from American sexism to make me notice it, and I can wind up really embarrassed by parts of manga I generally enjoy. (Superior, for instance, has one jarring sexist line, then never really comes back to it.)

What is this 'embarrassment' you speak of? We have people who admit to binging on MLP:FiM here. 'Shame' is such an old fashioned concept.

And yet, there are definitely things people love that get crapped on. What if you liked 50 Shades of Grey? Do you really think that's not something you'd get shamed for?

You don't think there are people here who are hesitant to talk about certain fandoms or aspects of fandoms because of the shit they'll get? Isn't there a secret about RPF today?

I enjoy a lot of moves that get hated on. Priest, Snow White and the Huntsman, Battleship, etc.

If there's one character I like or an interesting premise or something visually interesting, then I'm good.

I loved that show. But the fandom, my god...

I guess Sailor Moon was pretty embarrassing, but it was still my first fandom.

Where do I even begin? I think half the fandoms I've been in are frowned upon. (Sherlock, Star Trek: AOS, Hobbit films...)

It's only certain fans that I find embarrassing (like the Sherlock fans who send fic to TPTB) though. I fully acknowledge that every fandom has shitty fans so I don't let that scare me off.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-21 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I still really like the Hobbit fandom. I just ignore what I don't like and am still able to find things I enjoy. My last fandoms was ALL toxic wank so I'm glad to be away from it.

This isn't really a fandom but it's definitely an unpopular fan opinion: I love Iron Man 2 and think it's the best Iron Man movie by a long way.

This didn't used to be the case, but lately I've started to feel like Supernatural falls into that category. Not many people around here seem to like it anymore. :(

SPN's kind of always been regarded as a "batshit fandom."

The Lorax/The Once-ler. I'm not IN the fandom, but I lurk around and look at fanart and all of that.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-21 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Any anime fandom. I'm not into them but I also love BL and that is really looked down on.

Shaman King

(Anonymous) 2015-02-21 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
The series is super problematic AND a mess in terms of quality, the fic was never any good, the fanart's rather bland, and the fans are...well, to say it kindly, they're rather childish especially the most outspoken scanlator

I still love the series.

Re: Shaman King

(Anonymous) 2015-02-21 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
YES. Well... I usually forget there is a fandom, but I love the series so much.

Anime/Manga.

I talk freely online about it, but irl? No. Nonononononono.

The Mortal Instruments

(Anonymous) 2015-02-21 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
Saw the movie, I know it's based on leatherpants!Draco fic, but I don't care. I want another movie. I liked it.

I like OCs and self inserts too (sometimes I just don't want to pair characters up/sometimes I'd like to imagine what would happen if I or my proxy where there).

Bleach? Anime in general? lol

Oh I know. A lot of ecchi action or comedies. As a woman I feel like somehow I'm supposed to loathe each and every one of them, but for every crappy one there's one with likable, fun characters and a decent plotline that I can't get enough of.
