Who here has read/watched Fifty Shades of Grey?

[personal profile] feotakahari 2015-02-21 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Because the Internet has no shame.

I haven't read or watched either, myself.

i've only read jenny trout's recaps. i should probably get around to it, but even reading the snippets of the books in those recaps was painful so i probably won't bother.

Same. But they're so in depth that they count in my book.

Yo, Right here.

My mom. lol She is a very respectable lady, in fact, a psychologist who actually works with domestic abuse among other things. She got a kindle a year back, but is technologically illiterate so my older sister put books on for her - and my mom doesn't like "stressful" books/movies because she deals with dramatic stuff in real life, so tends toward romantic comedy type stuff, or even flat out dumb stories like Lifetime movies. But she told me once she had read a book called 50 Shades of Grey and loved it. I don't think she realized the reputation it had. She even made my dad bring her to the movie on Valentine's Day.

Awkward, but oh well, I guess she is the target audience.

Not cover to cover, but I've read excerpts, and not just the ones people post on the internet to illustrate how horrible the books are. I read them out of actual copies of the books that a friend owns.

I not only read the first fifteen chapters of that damn thing, I MSTed them too. I even have a funny story as to WHY!

See, I'm a recovering starver. When my eating disorder was at its worst, I discovered that during dinner time, if I put 50 Shades in front of my face and worked on my MST, I'd eat sorta automatically. Next thing I'd know, the food was gone, safe in my belly, and I didn't have to worry for another few hours. Oh, and I'd have some snarky lines of text. So I am perversely grateful for 50 Shades for being my anti-ED.

That said, once I got it more under control, I couldn't bear the story anymore. I COULDN'T MAKE IT FUNNY. The more I read it, the dirtier and sadder I felt, and that's no way to enjoy a book. Soon even my own determination wasn't enough, and I had to quit.

BUT I TRIED GODDAMMIT. And I got farther than I ever did in Twilight!

I'm going to watch the movie when a good camrip/DVDrip hits the web.

Same. I'm just perversely curious.

I read part of it way back when it was still "Master of the Universe". I didn't get through it though.

Now I just occasionally check out idetonatearoundhim.tumblr.com, but most likely won't read the novels myself. I couldn't get through it when it was free after all, so don't see why I should spend money on it. Might pirate the movie later on though.

How does 50 Shades of Grey compare to the original Twilight fanfiction?

I've read the recaps on das_sporking. It was still too much bad for me, tbh.

Everything I know about 50 Shades of Bad BDSM I learned from amusing press tours. That said, it had inspired equally amusing fanart:

I can kinda see Jasmine and Aladdin getting into it. Belle and Adam? Not so much.

Idk, Belle could have a bestiality kink from...well... you know. With Adam as Beast.

Yeaaahhh.

At least all of them look like they're enjoying the experience.

Not me, but mainly because I'm sex-repulsed. Not wanting to support it isn't a factor -- if I did want to see it, I'd buy a ticket for another movie and sneak in. But the thought of watching a movie that's all about sex grosses me out something terrible. Same reason I won't ever read the book. Even reading reviews/MSTs of it makes me want to hurl.

I read the infamous tampon snippet that wasn't in the movie. Might end up downloading the PDF because I'm a masochist.

I started to.

The writing was so terrible I couldn't get past the first couple of chapters.

It may very well be craptastic for a hundred different reasons, but when you can't even get past the awful writing to find out what those reasons are... yeah.

I tried reading the original fic and got like a page or two in. It just seemed kind of boring; there has to be something else going on in a story other than "there's nothing hideously wrong with the way I look but I'm so average nobody would want me," which is the impression I got from those couple pages.

I read the book because a co-worker of mine liked it. The writing is absolutely horrible, but I enjoyed the theme and basic idea behind the characters. The sex was fun too, very vanilla.

Haha, I just came back from watching the movie for a second time. I liked it much better this time around than the first time. They cut out all the horrible dialogue that made the book so cringe-worthy and just left the best parts of the sappy romance combined with what is essentially a movie about sex and sensuality. Not really original but definitely fun and I am looking forward to the sequel.

I listened to the entirety of Mark Reads 50 Shades of Grey series on Youtube, where he reads the book aloud while trashing how terrible it is. I recommend this version, it's like sitting with a friend and laughing together at its horribleness.

He just started the second book so you can catch up. :)
