I am tickled pink by the number of AWESOME, GENEROUS artists on this community who do not mind having their art stolen and used without their permission. You see, I'm an up and coming iconist who LOVES using fanart without crediting. I'll be sure to take down all of your names and use your art and ONLY your art for my icons, and I'll definitely be spreading the anonymous love on the chan too. Thanks, guys, you are all really great

Is that sarcasm I detect?

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah exactly same here. Few things make me happier than people spreading my art around for maximum sharing, enjoyment and lulz, and I don't give a shit if they credit me or not.

Word. Fanartists who kick up a shitstorm about this stuff need to get a grip and stop being such melodramatic attention whores.

FUCK YEAH, TRAUMA CENTER! :D
I love those games. They're hard as hell, but they're fun. (I never did beat the DS one though, the worm-like GUILT was too hard)
Also, Valerie is hot and I want to bang her cosplay her someday. :D

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, lol?

I put plenty of effort into heaps of fanart, it gets posted around without my consent quite a lot, and I do not give a sideways flying fuck what people do with it after I've put it up on the internet. Once I've posted it, as far as I care, it belongs to fandom. Fanartists who can't stand their stuff being reposted or used in icons without their express written permission need to get the hell over themselves and recognise that you know what that means? It means people LIKE your stuff. The only reason so many people think this is a "problem" is that most artists, especially ones who post stuff online, are inherently attention whores – I do not hesitate to admit this includes myself. It comes with the "making stuff and then posting it online to show to as many other people at once" territory. So given half the chance to get all self-righteous about something and get everyone to rally to their cause whilst giving them OMG YOU POOR THING backpatting about the fact that someone didn't link back to their webpage to give them more fame ... why aren't they going to jump on that bandwagon. So nearly all fanartists act like that and all their grovelly fans get all bitchy at anyone who doesn't treat the fanart as if the right of the fanartist to get as popular as possible off it is so HUGELY IMPORTANT. Fanartists need to calm down – they can't argue any copyright issues because they don't own anything and the legality is dubious, and a real artist knows the real worth of creating is in the creating itself, not in milking the product for all the hits and praise they can get. Yeah, I whore my fanart around no end because I do like feedback, but the fact is no amount of comments can compare to the satisfaction of finishing a piece I like.

tl;dr

Fanartists who kick up a fuss about this shit need to get over themselves. It's just fanart. We're supposed to be drawing it for fun, and if hits matter so much to someone that they're going to take their stuff down if people don't go out of their way to give them more, then dude, watch me have no respect for them as an artist. Or really as a person cause whatever way you look at it that's just dumb.

How about I don't (not like I can anyway, I get all my stuff off of 4chan), I continue to post my delicious fanart icons, and we all move on with our lives instead?

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
People who write doujinshi generally aren't making money, though. Most of them only sell their doujinshi for enough to cover the cost of making the book and attending the events where they sell them. That's why they can get away with it legally – because it's generally accepted that doujinshi represent no financial threat to the publishers and authors of the manga they're based on.

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, no, the artists in question are douchebags for taking their stuff down because people weren't going out of their way to give their websites as much attention as possible.

[livejournal.com profile] haloradio is a good example of a person who post the art in her journal first then ask her friends about the source then iconize it. idk, I'm tired of this kind of argument (especially the baawww and the cry moar comments), just move on with our lives kk? Sorry if I replied, since the above anon asked. :/

[identity profile] negakat.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
I use fanart in icons. Fanart I found from ~*4chan*~. But you know the problem with it? Most of them are reposts of reposts of reposts so after a while, the source gets lost and no one knows anymore after so long. (Seriously, the art I end up using? Four or five years old) But you know the secret? I don't post them in icon communities. I make them for myself, and hey, if someone else wants to use it, by all means.

And, as far as icon artists demanding credit? uuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh I don't? I think it'd be nice if they did so people can know where the icon came from and see what else there is, but I'm not going to throw a hissy fit if they don't.

OH HAY you know something else? I post my fanart on the interweb. And, seriously, if someone actually finds the stuff and likes it enough to make graphics from it, then that's pretty awesome. I would probably try to contact them to find out what they liked about the image, but other than that, I don't really care.

- edit: this is for 25, by the way.

When I post my stuff on 4chan, I only credit me when people ask for sauce. 'Cause otherwise it don't really matter. :Db

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
c. I'm a fairly popular fanartist and I love it when my art gets plastered on 4chan even though no one knows I made it, because as an artist it makes me much happier to see a lot of people enjoying my art than everyone knowing my name. And I don't care at all whether people use my art for icons.

Duh, people enjoying fanart is WAY less important than the artist getting as many pageviews as possible DIDN'T YOU KNOW??

[identity profile] crimewave.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
ACCIDENTAL OR NOT, I LOVE HOW YOU COMMENTED WITH THIS JOURNAL, LMFAO ♥

(Anonymous) 2008-01-07 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
XD That's true!

I dunno, I'm kind of... shocked that so many people have such entitlement over fanart that it would evoke such a cry of 'CRY MOAR' outrage, like what we're expecting from them is totally outrageous!!!111, when basically it just means they're too lazy/disrespectful to be bothered to find the original source.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-07 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
Then ask for SAUCE.

not the op

(Anonymous) 2008-01-07 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
There's a very simple solution to this. Defriend people if you don't like reading their journal.

Yes, you have a valid point that not everyone has time or that not everyone shares the same fandoms, etc. However, the truth of it is that many people assume that a mutual friending means mutual acknowledgment of posts. After all, everyone posting on LJ does it to get some sort of attention, otherwise they wouldn't be public posts at all.

If a lot of people that you don't like reading about only have you friended for your fandom content? Keep it unlocked or in a separate journal. It's not hard to do.

I realize that our views conflicting is based on preference, but I think it's unfair to keep leading people on when you have no interest in reading their entries at all. Unfriending them when it gets to the point that they're boring is a lot less rude than that.

14. I do too. I played Vagrant Story long before 12 came out, and I couldn't find words to describe how important the game was; to me, and to gaming in general. I wanted the whole world to play it. Then 12 came out as its prequel. 12 is the best Final Fantasy, and not just that, but a game so real and made with so much passion that I still haven't been able to tell anyone just how much I love it. And, the fandom is great as well, full of people who have memorized the entire Bestiary, played through Vagrant Story and Tactics, and actually make an effort to sound like the characters. It's impossible to describe how important it is to have a fandom talking about "a tuft of Phoenix Down" and "the Moogle living in ___ named ___". The game designers did everything they could to revolutionize the series and they succeeded. I haven't seen a Final Fantasy this good since FF3j (for NES) and 12 surpasses it on every possible level.

So, yeah, you're not alone.

28. ... It is sort of hot, isn't it? But so wrong. :D

38. Word. I don't care how gay they act, and I don't care I usually ship anything with a pulse. Sport/Robbie makes me want to cry. The fangirls are completely serious about it, too.

Oh snap, that's Paraskevi. I cannot for the life of me complete the Paraskevi operations on the DS version, but I can do it on the Wii version for some reason. o_O
