Ahahahahah AHAHA. dude. Most ppl who do a bit of fanart DO make money off of it, or their other artwork. Someone like ah, Makani, who is big in HP fandom, does artwork of HP characters AND ocs as commissions. saying 'they arent making money off their fanart' is like saying ppl who write doujin's aren't making money. Riiight.

I see your point, but you're continuing to represent yourself incoherently. Stop before someone gets hurt, like you.

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
mmh, poor anon, bein butthurt. Like seriously wtf dude. what is incoherant about that honestly -_-

(Anonymous) 2008-01-07 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that you can't string a sentence together to make sense really hurts your honesty. Maybe if you take more than five seconds to bang out an angry response like a monkey with your thumb up your ass people would be more willing to listen.

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Um wtf? You must be intensely retarded if you can't understand what I'm writing. READING COMPREHENSION, GET SUM.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-07 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Most sane people have trouble hashing out the rantings of a lunatic.

P.S. Spelling? Grammar? Might want to acquire some. I hear education helps. :)

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here, I'm really not. Most artists dont post full doujinshi online, they may show a preview but I have yet to see a full thing. When people buy their doujinshi, it's their's to scan and share. So yes, the original artist has made money.

These are just icons we're talking about. Making a little 100x100 square, cropping out a lot of details(resizing causes a loss of detail also) is hardly damaging. Hell, after most icons are done, they barely look like their original picture. So tell me again, how is this hurting the artist?

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
...

"When people buy their doujinshi, it's their's to scan and share."

Um. Let me teach you about this thing called COPYRIGHT.

"Hell, after most icons are done, they barely look like their original picture. So tell me again, how is this hurting the artist?"

Um. have you ever heard of this thing called not altering artwork that does not belong to you? unless you have direct permission to do so, it's illegal.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-07 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you care so much, anyway? Don't you have something better to do?

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
As an artist, this type of shit is so very "my business", you have no idea

(Anonymous) 2008-01-07 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
It just seems rather pointless to get so worked up over something that, in the grand scheme of things, doesn't really matter in the end.

Yes, because COPYRIGHT will totally get you very far with fan made works

You're a fucking idiot, you really really are.

... Look, I see what you're saying, but I really think it's disingenuous to try to drag legal issues into this, seeing as fandom is one huge legal grey area to begin with. I'm not a lawyer, but I really don't think that copyright applies to derivative works, and... well, like I said, all of fandom is sort of dubious, legally. You could never bring a case to a lawyer saying "this person made icons of my fanart without asking!" At best you'd be laughed at, and at worst you might get in trouble yourself.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
It's already been said, yeah, but... legality is not an issue with fanart! Fanart is already illegal! O.o

I mean, while you're at it why not get your panties in a twist about people taking art for icons from original artists/manga-ka without giving credit? That happens a hell of a lot more often, and is DEFINITELY illegal. Do you want me to email Kentarou Miura and ask permission to use his art for the icon I'm using?

This sort of double-standard in fandom just pisses me off. Just take a chill pill and stop worrying about credit - in fandom, everyone's ripping off someone. If someone used my art in an icon, I'd be flattered as hell.

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Uh huh. They make money off it by doing commissions, you're right, but exactly HOW does redistribution hurt their commissioned work and the money they already made from it?

You are just lol all over the place.

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
It hurts them by not redirecting to the original artist if say, ppl want money from it, and often times the commissioners do not want it to be distributed.

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
They already made the money when the work was completed. There is no more money from that sole piece of art to be had.

Someone stated that they can't be hurt if the don't see it, and you made the case that it does hurt them because they make money.

However, as we have discussed, this is untrue. At this point, after distribution without permission, money has already been made.

Do you understand this?

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, you're an idiot.

Just forget it.

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
And you're a vindictive bitch who doesn't understand basic logic :)

CHANNEL THAT RAGE, CHAMP

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
I always got the impression that doujinshi was cheap as dirt in Japan because they only charged for the cost of printing. I doubt they're losing more than a few hundred yen, if anything - oh noes! Why should I feel obligated to financially support someone who's pirating anyway? I don't pay to read fanfiction. O.o

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
People who write doujinshi generally aren't making money, though. Most of them only sell their doujinshi for enough to cover the cost of making the book and attending the events where they sell them. That's why they can get away with it legally – because it's generally accepted that doujinshi represent no financial threat to the publishers and authors of the manga they're based on.
