I think I already saw this secret somewhere?

Anyway, NGL, this doesn't sound any more ridiculous to me than the majority of standard religious practices and beliefs. In fact, it strikes me as the sort of thing a lot of religious/somewhat religious people could secretly believe in. God must have some means of letting his followers know he's there and he's guiding them (well, a caring, omniscient God); how's media bad for this purpose?

I *am* a religious person in the more traditional sense, and I think that for something like this - if this is how you're connecting, who's to say it's not G-d's way of communicating with you, or giving you a nudge in the right direction? If it works for you, then I don't think there's anything 'wrong' with it at all.

though, I can also see why this is a secret, 'cause I think it's the kind of thing some people might find difficult to understand/relate to

I was kind of that way as a teenager. I mean, it may have been delusional "magical thinking," but yeah, I really thought that way for a long time.

That's cool. As a religous person myself, I believe there are many paths to God, and that sometimes things will appear to show you/nudge you in the right direction. Has happened to me with books, movies, shows in particular times in my life.

sounds like apophenia to me, but ymmv.

I think stuff like this and I'm sure it is apophenia but I don't really care because it's still meaningful to me. But then I'm not someone who cares about big cosmic Truths. If my beliefs aren't true, I don't care because it works for me anyway.

our truths are justified beliefs epistemology 101 etc

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
This could also be a developing psychosis. That was the case for me, at least. It started with telling myself that God is giving me tips through media, and ended with becoming convinced that The Exorcism of Emily Rose is all about me and there's a demon after my soul.

I guess, as long as you and OP don't take it too seriously, you'll be fine.

Does this make ship wars really really important

Have you ever called a competing shipper an apostate by mistake

God wanted you to ship X and Y, not X and Z, you Philistine!

Now go read my ship manifesto, Subtext 3:15, Quotes 5:2 and Recommended fanworks 7:4.

Am I the only one who finds it weird that a whole family suddenly converts into Christianity at some point in time?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Me. Like, Mom, Dad, and kids too?

I mean, I'm not judging, just really trying to picture this scenario in my head.
dreemyweird: (austere)

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2015-02-22 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I thought this was a bit weird, but I can imagine situations where this would happen. E.g. if they joined a religious community where their ancestors came from - say, an Old Orthodox one.

I have a similar story. One of my exes is Catholic and his entire family converted from like...Methodism or something to Catholicism a few years before I met him. He was the first to do it, but the rest followed.

It's kinda weird and I'm not sure why that happened. He was also pretty weird (to me at least) about his approach to religion overall.

I kinda like that my family was never like that. We've all formed our own beliefs, and while our parents' beliefs/lack thereof has influenced what we were exposed to, we still made our own personal decisions about what information to pursue and what to do with it once we had it.

In some sects, the father converts, and being the head of the household, everyone converts along with.

I don't, if it's a family where the kids are still under-aged.

The parents think it's a good idea and the kids go along with them because it's their parents, and the parents have explained out the reasoning why they think it's a good idea.

Adult children I find harder to believe, and teenagers may be more "Whatever, I'll do it to keep the peace" and maybe drift away from it in adulthood if they don't really believe.

ngl, I always find it creepy when parents force religion on their kids instead of letting the kids decide what they believe for themselves.

I... believe this too. Sort of. The media itself isn't a higher power, but it's a tool some higher power uses to assist/guide me because that's the best way to get through to me. I get very obsessed with media and in the past that has been enough to keep me afloat. That guidance is there for anyone, I think, if you just know how to spot the signs. It manisfests primarily as media for me but it could come through in pretty much anything, I guess.
Then again I also hear voices and sometimes see things that aren't there so maybe I'm just crazy.

Text: My family, including me, converted into Christianity from atheism when I was 14. But I can neaver be a true Christian. I believe in God/higher power but most religious practices sound ridiculous to me.

My true religion is the media, I believe the higher power guides me to the right media when I need affirmation in life. When I had academic difficulties in high school, suddenly I found movie X with inspirational students in it. When I’m doubting my choice in university, I found singer Y who sings about believing yourself. When I’m scared to face the transition to work life, TV series Z gave me glimpses about what kind of attitude I should take as an adult.

Most of them are found unintentionally, as in I never searched for a certain theme in media just to support me in my problems. The right timing never failed to amaze me every time.

S!B obvious reasons.
