Mostly he looks JUST LIKE the main character of Evil Within, the game that made me go "Surely the people who made Last of Us made this as well? Noooo just some blatant grabbing of UI and such without half the actual thought going into it."

You mean he looks JUST LIKE the main character of just about every AAA game of the last 5-10 years. I still wonder whenor if they will actually get tired of the good ol' brown haired, rugged mid 20s-30s type of guy.

I'm guessing you don't game often. Otherwise you'd realize just how alike ALL current male AAA title releases of certain genres look.

I like to joke that there's a factory in Detroit that churns these guys out by the fuckton. It's more entertaining and less soul-crushing than the likely true explanation.

They're pretty common in TV too.

...man, I just realized I don't have a single brown-haired white dude as a major character. Now I know why.

I'm pretty sure you're right about that.

I also don't have any stereotypical 30-something brown haired white dudes as main protagonists. They're all either way too old or way too gay to count.

Yup. It also probably helps that I mostly write spec fic, so the guys are as likely to be flaming unicorn-lizards as they are actual humans.

Seriously, what is up with old people never getting to be protagonists? It must suck, going to the library and finding everyone in your age group at best relegated to "sage mentor."

TV not fic, but Battlestar Galactica has Bill Adama as the main military commander and Laura Roslin as the main civilian commander. They're both in their 50s approximately. And there's also Saul Tigh and Tom Zarek who are older.

Also, I always assume people have watched it already, but ATLA and LoK have a bunch of cool, badass older folks.

Trollhunter (Norwegian movie, available with subs) has just about the most awesome old dude protagonist of all time.

You don't have to be a gamer to see those ads, though . . .they were all over Marvel comics for like a year when the game came out and I *always* thought it was Matt Smith.

The fun part is trying to figure out which characters are which. Half of these I don't recognize.

Sometimes I'm like "holy shit how do people ever expect to cosplay these characters," and then I remember they're fandoms that aren't exactly known for their cosplay.

Resident Evil actually has a lot of great cosplay. It's mostly owing to the fact that the costumes from that series have a lot more variation than just "average camo military kit". It's very distinctive, tbh.

I was about to go "is resident evil the one with pyramid head?" and then I looked it up and saw that it was Silent Hill.

...my horror game knowledge is lacking.

Well, yeah, basically. Slavs are quite mixed, but lighter skinned Russians tend to be more Nordic than Tatar in their ancestry. There's about as much racial mixing in that culture in some bloodlines as there is in any Caucasian North American you're likely to meet these days.

Nearly every AAA game to come out in the past five years, you mean? Yep.

Except for Far Cry 4, Remember Me, Crysis 2, Alien: Isolation, and The Walking Dead Seasons 1 and 2... Yeah. Pretty slim pickings for non-white or female video game protagonists.

It's something I feel pretty passionately about, tbh. Representation in video games is really really overdue.

And Transistor! And... Life is Strange just came out, but I haven't played it. And... that's it I guess. Not much on the horizon, either.
