Mostly he looks JUST LIKE the main character of Evil Within, the game that made me go "Surely the people who made Last of Us made this as well? Noooo just some blatant grabbing of UI and such without half the actual thought going into it."

You mean he looks JUST LIKE the main character of just about every AAA game of the last 5-10 years. I still wonder whenor if they will actually get tired of the good ol' brown haired, rugged mid 20s-30s type of guy.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-02-22 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing you don't game often. Otherwise you'd realize just how alike ALL current male AAA title releases of certain genres look.

Exhibit A:

lb_lee: M.D. making a shocked, confused face (serious thought)

I like to joke that there's a factory in Detroit that churns these guys out by the fuckton. It's more entertaining and less soul-crushing than the likely true explanation.

They're pretty common in TV too.

...man, I just realized I don't have a single brown-haired white dude as a major character. Now I know why.

I'm pretty sure you're right about that.

I also don't have any stereotypical 30-something brown haired white dudes as main protagonists. They're all either way too old or way too gay to count.

You don't have to be a gamer to see those ads, though . . .they were all over Marvel comics for like a year when the game came out and I *always* thought it was Matt Smith.

The fun part is trying to figure out which characters are which. Half of these I don't recognize.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-02-23 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I know most of them but... not exactly memorable, right.

Sometimes I'm like "holy shit how do people ever expect to cosplay these characters," and then I remember they're fandoms that aren't exactly known for their cosplay.

It's so frustrating, I can't tell the difference between all of them without a logo or background or SOMETHING to give a hint.

I guess that makes . . . sense?

Hey, come on, Big Boss was in his 20s during MGS3!

That's totally unfair, Alex Sheppard is in his early 20s at most!

.....sad thing is I can think of a lot that could be added to this list instead.

Huh... That's never a connection I would have made, but it's an interesting one. With some stubble and training maybe he could look the part?

...Troy Baker, though. Dat voice. I'd miss that voice.

It'd explain at least a little bit of BSI.

Maybe it'd even explain why BSI was so mediocre!

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Was it truly bad? Because it's been recced to me a couple of times and I was thinking about trying it out.
dethtoll: (Default)

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-02-22 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It basically takes every complaint everyone ever had about Bioshock 1 and makes a game out of it. It's linear to a fault, the primary character interaction is Disney-perfect and Disney-shallow, the plot is a jumbled mess of half-baked ideas that keep interfering with each other but weren't interesting on their own anyway, and the gameplay is "frenetic" as a replacement for deep (a la Call of Duty.)

I love Bioshock 1 and adore Bioshock 2. BSI feels like a bit of a slap in the face. Ken Levine believes his own hype.

Some people love it. Some people, like dethtoll as you can see, hate it.

If you want to give it a try, just borrow it from someone instead of buying it. That's what I did, since I'd heard mixed things.

FWIW I personally liked it, although there are a lot of valid criticisms to be made. I think Bioshock 2 is the best in the series though.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-02-23 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
YMMV

I really liked it. It suited a variety of play styles a lot better than BioShock 1 and 2, and I wouldn't call either of those games really non-linear. The plot and characters were more interesting, though the narrative was not quite as affective or intriguing to me. It had problematic elements, but also a way better ending.

Both are interesting games worth playing in their own right. I think the most skippable one is probably BioShock 2.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-23 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it depends. I mean, I loved 1, felt 2 was a huge letdown, and got completely swept up in 3. I don't think the story was as solid as 1, but man, it was a lot more fun to *play* for me.

(I guess it didn't help that I found the voice-in-your-ear character in 1 to be annoying. He'd chime in and I'd be like "Shut up! I don't want another quest! Go away! Just let me explore!)
