Lately it's been bugging me that most of the significant pokemon (starters, well-known ones like Eevee and Togepi, ones that tend to appear once or twice like Snorlax) are mostly male. When I was a kid playing the first generation before they introduced genders I headcanoned my starter as female and it would be nice to have a female starter out of nostalgia but I have never once had a female starter and I'm not even sure if the 87.5% rate for males applies to the one you get at the beginning or only the ones that are bred.

Yeah, that's always bothered me too. I'm fairly sure the high male ratio is so it's more difficult to breed them, but doesn't make it any less frustrating. I've been weirdly lucky on getting female starters, though.

Huh. I didn't even know pokemon had sexes. Or that you could breed them. I would play pokemon if the only purpose was to breed pokemon and sell them to other players.

I'm sort of planning to do that once I finish the pokedex. I want to breed a bunch of shiny pokemon and I can see what I can trade them for.

you might actually have fun with:

http://vdexproject.net/

it starts slow because there are many map obstacles and it takes a while to get enough money to really do anything, but what you described is a big part of the game

I'll give it a look! I just want a Pokemon MMORPG. WHY IS IT NOT A THING?

I warn you, like most MMOs it's got the creepy guys who will follow you around asking inappropriate questions but it's also fun:

https://pokemmo.eu/

(I'm mentioning because I swear it's got more than the usual amount of creepy guys.)

I nearly always reset to get a female starter. I don't even know why I do it, it's not for breeding purposes or anything. But there's something about it that makes me happy.

I think they did it to make breeding them "harder," but honestly with ditto and dedicated breeders, you're going to get whatever pokemon you want. It only affects the casual fans who just want whatever gender for whatever reason. (I like all girl teams myself. Especially since my teams are all huge intimidating non-feminine ground types. <3)

And I've had a couple female starters. As in, Pokemon Fire Red and Pokemon Diamond were female starters. Everything else was male and I was too lazy to restart.

I don't know why I've been so much unluckier than you and the anon up there. I've started enough games that statistically I should have gotten a female starter at some point but it never happened.

Also, I like the sound of your intimidating girl teams. I like having female pokemon like that too.

Yeah, I grew up loving fire and dragon types for obvious reasons, but then I started looking at various pokemon and realized that I really REALLY love ground types. Like, it's a love affair that's been going on for at least four years now.

Current team is officially Mamoswine (ground/ice), Garchomp (ground/dragon), Excadrill (ground/steel), Gliscor (ground/flying), Hippowdon (ground), and Swampert (ground/water). With Mamoswine and Garchomp taking down everyone before I can even burst out the others. I went super IV/EV training this past gen. Done the EV stuff before, but IVs were new (and easier than I thought they'd be, but apparently they've been getting easier to manipulate with each gen?). It was fun. I brought down my cousin's ALL LEGENDARY team with them.

Which btw, having auto-Sandstorm that lasts twice as long due to a held item + four pokemon with other abilities that benefit from it + Gliscor in the middle during a triple battle while the pokemon on the sides earthquake the hell out of the whole arena = BEST THING EVER.

I actually don't think the legendaries are that impressive in battle. I love a lot of them but they are definitely not the ones that I want to go into a fight with.

Ugh, I hate sandstorm! And hail. I should probably use it more often like you do. It would be so satisfying after all the times being on the wrong side of it. That is a brilliant set-up on your part.

HAHAHAHA. The only downside is that the one ground pokemon who has it as a natural ability (Hippowdon) is also SUPER SLOW. It's really hard for her to hold her own and she tends to be the first to die. :(

Tyranitar has it too, but I like the idea of being a pseudo-gym leader pure type-ist. So Hippowdon it is.

And even though I use Sandstorm, I still hate hail. The hypocrisy! Of course, I can always switch in Mamoswine who also knows Iron Head which is super effective against Ice...

...I might think about my pokemon strategies too much.

I've only gotten a female starter once and almost didn't realize it until I was getting ready to name her. I ended up making my whole team for that game female and named them all after magical girls.

Yeah it frustrates me to, when it comes to getting that female starter :( For xy I had to soft reset for just over 2 hours before a female appeared! Soooo frustrating.
