Media Pet Peeves

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-02-22 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some pet peeves you have that revolve around movies/tv/games/books?

I am currently on WoW leveling a rogue. And I realized it annoys the fuck out of me when I have a NPC battling with my for a quest. It makes it impossible to sneak around because they are aggroing everything in a 10 yard radius.

Another pet peeve is in (generally horror) movies where a bunch of people die. But at the end everyone is all happy and relieved. I just want a movie where it ends with the survivors trying to explain to cops that some ghost stole some kid they adopted three months ago.

Sex scenes in films and TV. I just want them to get on with the bloody story already.

This but broaden it to making out as well. Short little kisses are ok.

Ugh, I know. This is the bane of my existence for HBO. I just really don't want to see all these people have sex for no reason.

I'm with you 100%. They are always unnecessary. Implied sex is fine, but the whole thing just makes me uncomfortable and impatient. Not here for it!

Does TV news count? I am sick to death of hyperbole in news. Everything is "heart-wrenching" or "shocking" or "surprising" or whatever.

I am completely numb to it now and it makes every serious story feel like cheap theater. Have you ever watched a Dateline or those kind of shows? How can I take the murder and trial seriously when it's so melodramatic?

Seriously, go back to reporting the news without telling me how I'm supposed to feel about it.

I'm done with car chases, especially in TV. I blame NCIS LA. When I watched it, they had a car chase in every episode. I never thought car chases were that interesting anyway (one pitt maneuver and it would be over with in real life) but seeing them constantly has completely OD'd me on them.

I feel you with NPC. When I played Diablo 2, you'd get a free helper at one point and I'd always kill her off because she would get in my way.

The only car chase I ever remember enjoying is the one in The Triplets of Belleville. A lot of action staples bore me though. Like explosions.

I can't really think of any movies where I enjoy car chases. Maybe the one The Dark Knight. But I enjoyed that one because it was fun.

Lately it's been bugging me that most of the significant pokemon (starters, well-known ones like Eevee and Togepi, ones that tend to appear once or twice like Snorlax) are mostly male. When I was a kid playing the first generation before they introduced genders I headcanoned my starter as female and it would be nice to have a female starter out of nostalgia but I have never once had a female starter and I'm not even sure if the 87.5% rate for males applies to the one you get at the beginning or only the ones that are bred.

Re: Media Pet Peeves

[personal profile] seelolcanth 2015-02-22 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's always bothered me too. I'm fairly sure the high male ratio is so it's more difficult to breed them, but doesn't make it any less frustrating. I've been weirdly lucky on getting female starters, though.
kaijinscendre: (Default)

Re: Media Pet Peeves

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-02-22 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I didn't even know pokemon had sexes. Or that you could breed them. I would play pokemon if the only purpose was to breed pokemon and sell them to other players.

I nearly always reset to get a female starter. I don't even know why I do it, it's not for breeding purposes or anything. But there's something about it that makes me happy.

Re: Media Pet Peeves

[personal profile] othellia 2015-02-23 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I think they did it to make breeding them "harder," but honestly with ditto and dedicated breeders, you're going to get whatever pokemon you want. It only affects the casual fans who just want whatever gender for whatever reason. (I like all girl teams myself. Especially since my teams are all huge intimidating non-feminine ground types. <3)

And I've had a couple female starters. As in, Pokemon Fire Red and Pokemon Diamond were female starters. Everything else was male and I was too lazy to restart.

Those NPC's exist solely to punish us for the fact that we can stealth(not a Rogue myself but a cat-druid and I feel your pain). The worst were those sodding ghost-ogres in Talador because they kept running off and aggroing ALL THE THINGS so I couldn't stealth and then I'd turn around and see like 10 adds running after me. The fuck you stupid ogres.

And for other media types, clones. Fucking clone stories where the main character is cloned(through whatever means) and then they die at the end but it's okay see because their clone lived so they can go and live happily ever after with main character's family!... Like that is not happy, stop trying to tell me that's happy, THE PERSON THAT MC'S FAMILY LOVED IS DEAD AND GONE. But don't worry they can just be replaced! :DD Arghsfd *flips table*

I hate escort missions where the escort can die. I don't mind bringing the NPC from point A to point B but if they have ten health points and I have to replay the quest like seven times to get the character to survive then I start wanting to throw things (and/or quit).

Also, timed missions. I get why they make sense in some situations, but they're SO fucking annoying. Especially when it feels like the game is punishing you for exploring (like that main mission in Inquisition... Ugh, gtfo).

Women screaming their heads off in childbirth. Holy fuck, that's annoying. Yes, i know some women do, but guess what? NOT ALL OF US (#NotAllBirthingMoms). Just - so fucking annoying.

Most anything to do with babies in the media. Not all women want them. Not everybody thinks they're cute and adorable. Abortion doesn't mean depression and sadness. GRR. ARRGH.

Also - holy gods, this is petty - people sending their kids off to school without letting them finish their breakfast (you're going to be late!! run!!) or brushing their teeth. Jayzus.

Chosen One stories. I NEVER liked them. Harry Potter is the only one I could tolerate (and even then, only made it through the first few books) because at first, he was just "the Boy who didn't die" rather than "savior of the universe."

Also, a lot of JRPG tropes, honestly. Why are there random stupid sidequests when the universe is ending? Why do you have these stupid random encounters where you can't see the monster coming, and you get instantly transported to a boring flat arena where you can't even use the landscape for cover? Why doesn't everyone else get tired of the same post-battle lines over and over and over?

Scenes where characters (either male or female) take their clothes off, get changed in front of someone, take a shower or something, for no valid reason other than to show their body.

Okay this is quite specific but: in movies or TV, I hate it when characters are shown as kids and then as adults, and are roughly the same age as kids, but are played by actors with a significant age gap when they're adults.

Not a great example because it's hardly a movie in which accuracy matters but... in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, the title characters look the same age as children, but the adult versions are played by Gemma Arterton who's 29, and Jeremy Renner who's 44. 15 year gap!! Of course it's always the guy who gets to be played by a much older actor.

Well, I'm really starting to get annoyed by the "X happens, everyone turns violent and homicidal" plot twist. I am no longer surprised when it shows up, and I really think it's played out at this point (see: Alphas, Supernatural, The Crazies, at least one movie currently in theatres, others I can't think of right now).
