There's a Man in the Woods

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I brought this up yesterday, but I figured I'd bring it up again here.

Do you like horror series? Especially horror series that go into folklore, and urban legends, that all feed into modern horror? Do you like horror series that you're afraid might be real?

Come check out my series! I write a grad student who is researching urban legends and folklore about monsters, demons, and boogeymen. As she learns more about why these stories are important, she learns some things about herself, too.

Oh, and by the way. There's a man in the woods.

I like those things and was somewhat interested yesterday, but I dislike repeated self-promo enough so that I'm not going to check it out now.

At least use the ad thread or something.

Two mentions in two different posts is really not a big deal

OP here

Apologies for irking you. I didn't want to use the ad thread because I didn't think it fit, as it's not exactly a collaborative, community-driven comm, and more of a multimedia stroytelling project.

All the same, I'm just excited about it, and I want to share, and hopefully someone will have a good time with it, that's all.

If you don't want to look, that's totally cool, and I respect you wanting to maintain your boundaries. <3

You're fine, OP. Ayrt was just being a shit.

(though there is an "Advertising" area above the general comments that would probably have been better for this type of post, but as long as Case is fine with it, it's cool)

nayrt - Not trying to be mean here, but everyone who promotes their stuff always has a reason for why their promo isn't annoying spam but really legit. See what I'm getting at here? Your stuff may be good, but the very act of offering people unsolicited promo will turn off a certain segment of the viewing audience automatically. Especially if you bring it up more than once.

TBH I think this is true but I also think it's only true because people on F!S have weird-ass bugaboos about shit like this

it's just a thread about some crappy blog, people should chill the eff out

Re: There's a Man in the Woods

(Anonymous) 2015-02-23 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr is more laid back about self promotion, but personally, this doesn't mean I find it any less annoying. It's just that it's easier to unfollow/filter out the advertising without saying anything, which leads the people who self promote to believe that everything is cool.

Re: There's a Man in the Woods

(Anonymous) 2015-02-23 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
OP here.

This is totally a legitimate complaint, and I apologize for putting off any attention whore vibes. In the future, I'll use the ads thread for this.

And to reiterate, I originally really did not think my thread belonged in the ads thread (I even double checked to be sure), as the description seemed to discouraged personal or 1/1 stuff, and was more aimed toward community advertising.

But! As many people have pointed out, I can put it there, so I will in the future. I really do apologize, I didn't mean to annoy anyone.

You haven't annoyed me personally, but one thing to keep in mind would be the frequency with which you post about this. You've probably pinged a few radars re: self-promotion because you only just talked about this yesterday, and most people who read regularly/daily would have seen it already. F!S traffic doesn't have a massive turnover, despite how it may appear. You may not have needed to post about it again quite so soon after the first post.

You mention posting again about this in the future, so just something to consider so that you don't venture into overkill territory.

Don't be a dick.

OP. Anon who commented yesterday signing in to say I'm about halfway caught up

OP

Fantastic! I hope you've been enjoying it so far. Thanks for reading!

nayrt

Not enjoying or being convinced by advertising doesn't make someone a dick. You might arguably say that expressing this opinion is slightly dickish, but frankly, if I were someone who wanted people to read my work and my own efforts were sabotaging this goal, I'd want to know so I could find more effective ways of reaching a potential audience.

Re: There's a Man in the Woods

(Anonymous) 2015-02-23 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
All it does is chase away oversensitive dicks with sticks up their asses.

Re: There's a Man in the Woods

(Anonymous) 2015-02-23 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You can go on thinking that only "oversensitive dicks" don't love advertising, but you'd be incorrect. I hope you never have to promote anything of your own, because you're going to be turning a lot of people off your product.

Re: There's a Man in the Woods

Exactly this.

Successful self-promotion that doesn't piss your audience off is an art in and of itself. There's a reason a lot of people pass of the marketing of their work to someone else who have a better understanding of what they're doing. I know I would if I could afford it.

Building up a genuine and sincere relationship with your audience is the best way, even though it takes time and investment. Joining communities where you think you'll have an audience, saying a few things then slamming your promo down everyone's throat every chance you get is the worst way (and I'm not saying that's what OP's doing, just that it happens, happened here very recently, and it turns off even the most laid-back reader in the world when it's relentless and manipulative).

Y! In the earlier entries, there are more of them. But I plan on including more fairly shortly as well.

I thought this would be a thread about that really cool video

OP here.

This is an amazing piece of work! In case anyone is suspicious, it's an animated spoken verse poem, in the POV of a teacher about one of his students and how the kid starts rumors that escalate.

OP here!

Ahhh cool, I'm so stoked you found me elsewhere! Was it on tumblr or through unfiction?

Anyway, thanks so much, I really appreciate the feedback and love! <3

There's not really a man in the woods! You're lying to me!
