The important question to ask here is, why didn't they just bring back the Rani?

Eh, I still like the idea of having the Master as a woman in at least one of his/her regenerations, and overall I'm glad they did it because it paves the way for having an eventual female Doctor...

...but the execution was rather terrible. Using "Missy" instead of "Master" and suddenly hetero-snogging the Doctor are probably the top two on my list.

Right?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-25 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
RIGHT????

Seriously, fuck that shit. Aaaaaagh.

And fuck you, people who defend Moffat no matter what (I'm looking at you, Dr Sandifer)

I feel like I should be annoyed about "Missy" being used and about how stereotypically female she was. But I just loved her so much I can't bring myself to care.

AYRT

I am so so so so glad I haven't seen an episode since about 2010. Yeeech what a hot mess.

hetero-snagging

It's not really surprising though. Isn't confidently dangerous women Moffat's favourite type of woman character? Here's the Master, give her an innie instead of an outtie, and them Doctor come-ons are inevitable.

I don't watch this show anymore though, so idk what I'm actually talking about. All I've gathered is that she's another River or something.

I think the Moff has two basic things: confident dangerous women, and human puzzleboxes.

Not even joking. I think there's some people for whom a huge part of the attraction of a new relationship is the experience of coming to know someone and figure out who they are and sort through the mystery they present. And then once they come to actually know the person, a lot of that mystery is gone. And just judging by Moffat's writing, that certainly seems to be the case with him.

Haha you're first bit kind of reminds me about how much I like listening to this guy calmly rant about Doctor Who ♥

His writing does have the habit of overly extrapolating by telling us about a character, and not having that character live up to what he thinks he's built up about them. He's a great idea guy, it's just expanding on them is not his thing :U

It's such a frustrating thing. Because he definitely has his good qualities. (That's quite a good video, by the way).

I mean, at this point, I've definitely spent more time in my life thinking about Steven Moffat as a writer than I have about many writers that I like far, far more.

I guess. Simm played it pretty much as if the Master was in love with the Doctor too. And while Missy kissed the Doctor, he didn't kiss back. Yes, it is annoying that it took the Master becoming a woman for it to be canon that he had a thing for the Doctor, but it didn't bother me that it happened. I just thought it should have happened earlier.

And no, she's not another River.

It honestly does really bother me. I agree it's been a part of the character for a while, but it's really frustrating how that character note can only be physically expressed once the Master is a woman, and then once the Master is a woman, it gets expressed as soon as. It really annoys me.

The different versions were created by different showrunners, though. Not saying that Moffatt would have had Simm kiss Ten, but you can't blame Moffat for RTD not having them kiss. What RTD did and what Moffat did are two different things. And Simm was so completely obvious about the attraction the Master had for the Doctor, IMHO, that it was pretty much canon at that point.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-25 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, but it was still Moffat's choice how to play the storyline and who to cast.

And, honestly, hand to my heart, I wish he had either cast a male actor if he wanted to have the Master kiss the Doctor, or cast a female actor but had the relationship stay more in line with the previous relationship. I think it would have worked better storywise and just made more sense.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-25 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Moffat can't win. He made one of the two main (as in repeatedly regenerated Time Lords) female and it's gripe gripe gripe. He didn't cast a female as the Doctor and it's bitch bitch bitch. It is now canon (and not just a one off comment) that time lords can regenerate to a different gender if they choose to. That opens entire vistas of potential. You'd think people would be grateful, but you'd be wrong.

Get over yourselves, you whiners.

WELL I WASN'T GOING TO SPECIFY EXACTLY ALL HIS RIVERS but yes that was exactly what I was vaguely doing lol

ooooh who is the top left one? Ngl, Moffat and I share the same taste even if our waifus are the most incoherently written characters that he writes.

Slight spoilers, but she's Madame Karabraxos from the episode Time Heist. It's one of my more favorite episodes of Season Eight actually. And she is rather different from the others.

Well, more like Madame Kovarian in the sense that she does not kiss/flirt/etc with the Doctor, rather than Tasha Lem/Irene/etc. But unlike Madame Kovarian she actually has a motive for being a villain. And it has nothing to do with the Doctor. She's just a bank manager that doesn't like thieves. :D

Okay, so there is this timey-wimey component and she eventually goes back to the Doctor, but like on her death bed/last request sort of thing.

She does look like the others though. :|

...so Missy and the eyepatch lady are not the same person. Damn. For a while, I was kind of hoping that they were and that the Master had been back and plotting for longer than just the one season.

Using "Missy" instead of "Master"

i handwaved it bc it gave us michelle gomez's rendition of HEY, MICKEY! i'm gr8 at priorities.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-25 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I enjoyed the actress but how it was written was horrible. I just hate that Moffat & co think turning someone into a woman means turning them into a stereotype.

Not that I expected better out of them but that's also why I was against the idea of a female master, not because I didn't want one but because I don't like the way the current writers treat women.

Yeah. I'd really love a female Doctor too, but not until Moffat leaves.

why didn't they just bring back the Rani?

Because they don't have the rights to the character.

Because the Rani was only an antagonist of the Doctor when he happened to get in her way, she doesn't have the Master's obsessive hate/love. I wouldn't mind if they brought her back, but she's not 'a female version of the Master'.
