I slaved to get him as a date on my second playthrough of FFVII.

How did you do that?!

I wasn't even aware that was possible!

Oh it's fully possible, but you have to manage to spurn everyone and do the Vincent side quest before you get to the Gold Saucer and trigger the date sequence. It's doable, but you have to kind of squelch the usual game sequence around a little to do it.

I think there are probably a few FAQs devoted to it by now.

Not a joke. It's something that's actually possible in the game.

This was well over 15 years ago now though, so I have no god damn idea how one actually has to go about it or whether you have to get it through a game glitch.

Did you do it yourself or did you hear it from someone else?

You're really tempting me to go replay the game just to see if I can replicate that.

I find it odd, though, that I've never heard of dating Vincent outside of those fanmade videos on youtube, especially in a game that has been combed through for secrets so obsessively:

Actually did it myself. It might only work on old versions of the game though, because I'm 60% sure you have to exploit a bug in order to be able to do it.

I bought the game almost as soon as it was available in North America (I think I bought it in early 1998?) and it still works just fine, so I guess I know what I'll devote my free time to these next few weeks!

Oh man, now I'll have to go print the date mechanics again to know how to spur everyone something fierce. (I still remember how to get Vincent before the Gold Saucer, though, so that shouldn't be a problem.)

As long as you can do both of those things, you're golden. It definitely involves not getting a flower from Aeris, I recall that much.

I forget what you're supposed to do to not get Tifa and Barrett though, but I'm sure those things will be around on walkthroughs still.

Wait, I think I was reading your comments wrong. You mean you need to go to Lucretia's cave before getting to the Gold Saucer's date scene, right?

That is gonna be a bit tricky. D:

And I was running the affection value numbers with the Date walkthrough and the lowest I can see them getting is:

Aeris: 16, Tifa: 0 (or -13, if negative numbers are possible), Yuffie: 8, Barret: 0 (-8).

The guide says that if they're all equal, the game still will take an order of preference:

Aeris, Tifa, Yuffie and Barret.

I'm starting to think emulation and game shark codes might be the way to test this.

As far as I recall, negative numbers for affection are possible, which is the only reason it works.

You'd probably have a way easier time of this on an emulator. As I recall it took having a new game+ save file to be able to breed the gold chocobo (which therefore opens up the world map and lets you break the order sequence if you get it in the early game) in order to do it.

Okay, now I'm sure you're messing with me. There's no New Game + option on Final Fantasy VII.

You'll have to take it with a grain of salt, since this was literally back in 1997.

I remember there was absolutely no dialogue, and the FMV cut out halfway through. It was definitely not within the game's normal functioning, but it really happened.

It's really not possible. :-/ I don't know what the person you're replying to is trying to tell you, but that's blatantly untrue. The only possible date options are Aeris, Tifa, Barret and Yuffie.

Cut things from the game are still being discovered more or less recently, so that's why I didn't want to dismiss the idea out of hand, but it seems like the kind of thing that someone would have unearthed by now from the game's code and dialogue scripts, no? I mean, we already know of cut quests, cut areas, cut dialogue, cut scenes, cut game mechanics...

That's true, but at the same time, how many hundreds of thousands of people have played FFVII, how many hackers have cracked it open and found most of what there was to be found before the year 2000, and yet no where on the Internet will you find anyone talking about an in-game Vincent date (besides seedy claims on online message boards that are never followed up with proof). What hackers have been able to do is uncover the values of each character's date mechanics (uncover an otherwise invisible chart of affection values) and Vincent is not included in that.

I mean, hey, anything is theoretically possible but the chance that someone actually dated Vincent and it was a scripted event is pretty darn unlikely, unfortunately. I think it's fairly safe to say that if it was possible, it'd be on the Internet by now with step-by-step guides. But I guess if someone is really determined, there's a hack program for PC FFVII you can install and manually set each affection value (for the four possible candidates) and if you set them all to -50 or something I suppose one could see for themselves if Vincent is possible. (The problem is though that it doesn't matter how low everyone is, Aeris will still get priority if she's tied for the lead, then Tifa, then Yuffie, then Barret. I can't imagine how this could be bypassed for a fifth character)

No, it's possible. But... I mentioned earlier in the thread that this was 15 years ago. I should also mention I played FF7 about eight times through- some runs I used a Gameshark to mod my party, other times I just modded my inventory.

I might have been using a Gameshark for that particular playthrough and subsequently forgotten it. But, it is possible. This was in 1997, well before youtube existed.

Uh that's really, really not possible. There is definitely no Vincent date scene. There are plenty fan made videos on Youtube, maybe you're misremembering?

Definitely not misremembering, however I might have used a Gameshark and not remembered that. Like I said... over 15 years ago.
