It depends on the job, I think. You don't have to care about stocking shelves to get it done, but if your job involves teaching children or assisting people with disabilities, then you should probably have some pride in doing your job well.

+1

I actually work at a school, and seeing teachers who clearly DGAF and just want the paycheck actually annoy me. Find another profession and give the job to a good teacher.

There's an ongoing debate in my country right now about making it more difficult academically to get into teaching, and I understand that to a point and it would be nice if all teachers were geniuses, BUT that doesn't guarantee that they'll be better teachers.

Isn't this why so many teachers burn out though.

Got a good mate who's basically being offered the opportunity to be a department head at 26/27 in a place where doing it for a year would set him up for anywhere he wants.

And he's probably not going to take it because of just how stressful it is.

Wait, are you really trying to say that we should lower our expectations of teachers so that the slackers and bullies on the faculty won't feel so much pressure to do the job they were hired for?

DA

I think to reasonably expect more from them, we first need to stop underpaying and overworking them. I don't mean rich college professors in universities, I mean the teacher trying to get inner city kids to take an interest in math. Clearly one of these jobs is more stressful than the other, on average, and with much less pay/benefits

rich college professors

Lol, no.

No, I'm suggesting that the incredible pressure gets eased up a little, and we stop chewing up incredibly bright talented grads and then spit them out when they can't keep up with the insane workload and shifting expectations anymore.

Yeah, it's not for everyone and I know a lot of people move on to different things because teaching isn't what they thought it would be like. It's one of those jobs that follows you home at night.

Honestly, most of the higher ups have no soul. It's the secret to their success.
