Do you think you're good at your job?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone else agree?

I think it's interesting how much we invest in our jobs as our self image to the point we deny the reality of it. There shouldn't be anything shameful about "just" being okay at your job and using it as a means to an end.

I strongly believe in a fair day's work for a fair day's pay. So basically right now I'm doing minimum work for minimum wage.

I am extremely, extremely good at being unemployed.

I dunno... normally I am, but lately I've been really half-heartedly doing it and I don't know if it's that because of some personal things I'm just generally in the dumps, or whether I'm getting a little bored with it. It's not my true calling, that's for sure, but they don't seem have jobs in my true calling and there are things I love about my job.

There are parts I'm really good at by my standards, and others I tend to overlook.

In more practical terms, am I better than anyone else who's expressed interest in the position? Yeap

It depends on the job, I think. You don't have to care about stocking shelves to get it done, but if your job involves teaching children or assisting people with disabilities, then you should probably have some pride in doing your job well.

Lol. I don't even care. I'm reasonably competent and then I go home. I hate my job but I'm too lazy to quit.

I think I'm good at my job. But it's also a means to an end. My job is an entry level job, and I'm good at it. But I don't want a 'professional' job. I'm fine with having 'just' a job. I feel like society makes that sort of shameful as well, like I should always be looking to move up and have career aspirations. Sure, more money would be nice, but as far as work tasks and responsibilities? I'm fine with what I have now. It suits me.

As a phlebotomist I have like a 98% accuracy rating. To phlebotomists that's pretty good, to all you other people, terrifying. :P

I'm damn good at my job, and my supervisors agree (perhaps not with the damn part, but I am really good at what I do)

That fact that I'm really good at this job is partly what's keeping me from resigning and finding a new one, despite being terribly bored by my current one. (Not that my job is particularly difficult or anything, but I really like consistently being among the best in my office.)

I'm good at the parts I care about and bad at the parts that I strongly feel shouldn't even be part of my job. I operate a cash register quickly and efficiently, I'm friendly, and whenever it's possible for me to do a little something extra for a customer I do. I'm...okay, I'm adequate at tidying up during downtime, because there's only so many shirts I can fold before my brain goes away completely and tries to take the rest of me with it. But I'm terrible at getting people to sign up for the store's loyalty card or apply for a store credit card, because I have this crazy notion that when people say they're not interested I should respect that.

I'm very proud of the work I do, even though I'm not respected or paid well for it. I'm hoping to get into a better-paying position so I can pay off my college debts, but if possible, I'd like to do a more advanced version of what I'm currently doing.

Re: Do you think you're good at your job?

I think it's important to put work into things that are in fact, important, but I think we pretend a lot of jobs are essential when they really aren't.

I actually think it's a dangerous mindset to put too much stock into "working hard" because it ties into the bootstraps mentality and causes companies to take advantage and overwork people who are getting underpaid.

Everyone should do their job but we should all also have time to relax and it shouldn't be a big deal if you're not the best at your job ever. If the job gets done, it gets done.

I am fantastic at my job. Wow that sounds really egotistical. XD I don't mean it that way, but I'm just one of those people who don't like it when I'm not doing something properly, so a career that I've spent most of my life in means I'm proud to say I'm very good at it.

The downside to this means I get a LOT of stuff dumped on me at my work because my immediate boss and my manager know I'll get it done and get it done properly.

I don't mind the responsibility, but a tiny part of me sees the slackers and bare-minimumers who are making the same wage as me and that part gets all petty, wishing pay was based on amount and quality of work, not just showing up and whining.

Yup, but tbh I think it's the kind of job most people with the correct training and some commonsense could do. It's a stepping stone and all that. Has it's exciting moments though.

I think I was not entirely qualified when I was hired, but my bosses think I'm good at my job. The people I do tasks for at work think I'm good at my job.

I think what they think matters a lot more than my own belief that I'm an imposter hack, and thus have to believe that I've gotten a lot better at my job since I was hired, and now am pretty decent at it, even if I still have plenty I can learn before I feel fully qualified.

Before I fell apart, I was one of the best on earth in my particular niche. Quite possibly the best.

I miss that.

I think I'm very good, but I could be better, and the people I work with seem to expect it given my qualifications. I can't bring myself to try, though. The depression I was hit with back when I living the elitist life nearly wrecked me.

My job is very important to me, and I do think I'm good at it. I also think there's infinite space for improvement, and I am constantly tweaking and trying new things. Never complacent.

I think I am.

I detail cars and I work really hard every single day. I work with my brother, and we cleaned 11 vehicles (cars, vans, 2 pick-up trucks) on Monday, and I (as well as him) am always hustling like that. Some people agree that I'm a hard worker, but others don't, because I value my breaks and stubbornly take them. It's a lot of physical work, and I think it's unhealthy to miss breaks or postpone them for long periods of time.

I also refuse to stay more than an hour past the time I'm supposed to be clocking out, because my me-time is important for my physical and mental well-being. I am committed to the job, but not to where I want to kill myself over it. It's not my career path, that's for sure lol, and life is too short. I'm pretty honest about valuing sitting on my ass at home reading comic books or playing video games, which leads some of my co-workers to believe I'm lazy.

But the ones who matter (my boss, of instance) view me as a valued employee, so I don't stress much about what anyone else thinks, really.

I kick ass at my day job.

I do, actually.

I'm still in training but I'm confident I will be one of the best in my department in a few months. Of course, my department has pretty high turnover and it's an entry-level job, so that isn't saying too much.

There shouldn't be anything shameful about "just" being okay at your job and using it as a means to an end.

No, I wouldn't say it should be shameful. It is kinda hard for me to understand though. If I wasn't invested, at least on some level, in the thing I spend 40 hours a week doing, my life would be kinda miserable because I can't imagine spending that much time on something I didn't care about. I'd be constantly bored, frustrated, and tired. Even when I worked at a job that was definitely *not* in an industry I wanted to stay in, I cared about what I did because doing something and not caring just strikes me as utterly pointless.

To each their own - I guess it's just a mindset I have a hard time wrapping my mind around. Some of my co-workers are more like that though - especially odd considering the setting I work in, but hey.

I'm good at making up drinks that taste good and pretty consistent at getting latte art on every one (customers get cheery about that). But my personable friendly skills are bare minimum and operate on the "don't care? don't ask." policy of not chatting people up unless I already like them. If I could just stay on bar, it'd be awesome.
