The government has more authority (rarely a good thing), but it's not in the feds' best interest to change anything. Why leave the comfort and safety of our homes when we have our bread and circuses right here? Our lives and internet access will not change at all.

I'm not sure I get it. Was there anything you were hoping for?

Nope. This is a lose/lose situation. Net neutrality passed, so now the federal government has the power to pass a bunch of new laws and implement new regulations on private businesses and their products and services. All in the name of the 'public interest.'

If net neutrality had not passed, then big business would have had the power to manipulate what I could and could not view on the internet.

Like I said, lose/lose. But everything stayed the same, so we can keep on keepin' on.

this illustrates pretty well the way I think of myself as a libertarian (I use the word loosely at this point but idk what else I'd say?). I don't like the idea of corporate business OR the government having too much power over anything. it's important to have balances across the public/private line.

Someone pointed out that if the ISPs had just been a little less greedy and left this alone in the first place, net neutrality would never have needed to be formally enforced and opened the door to more government regulation. But nooo.

This is one of those weird Yank things, isn't it?

You do realise that the government has authority, by definition, as a sovereighty, yes? It's just a question of whether you use it. ("You" because you are a citizen of a democracy, so they're exercising that authority on your behalf, you see.)

I agree with you in the sense that I think icey used the wrong word when they said authority and meant something like 'power'. But on another level, I do think there is an underlying philosophical difference here, in terms of how one conceptualizes the nature and the power of government.

I think many Americans would, almost reflexively, reject the idea that the government is sovereign in the sense that you're using here. I think there's a different concept of authority that's much more specific and grounded and circumscribed and limited. I think it's much more of a republican, constitutional understanding of how sovereignty functions and from what sources power flows. And that doesn't make it wrong and tbh I'd rather be on the American side of this one.

So, you would rather this authority, power, or right to control your internet access was entirely wielded by a commercial enterprise answerable to stockholders and the bottom line than that it be managed in the public interest by an office appointed by a democratically elected government.

And Comcast's or AT&T's freedom to throttle your Internet access is more important to you than your freedom in using the Internet.

Just so we are clear.

Hm? No, I was talking about the general principle, not about my preference in this specific situation. I think it's clearly better to have the government regulate this. But I also think it makes sense to talk about it as an expansion of government power. I don't agree that the government as sovereign possesses that power in potential. That's what I was arguing.
