1) halfway through the first book is about where I almost gave up - mostly because it was boring and purplish to me - but the actual cool fantasy and politics parts pick up shortly after that. As the series goes on she has sex with more people she wants to (but also definitely continues to let herself be abused by people she doesn't especially care for as a means to an end, so, YMMV)

2) skip to the third trilogy, Naamah's Kiss/Curse/Blessing

It's set about 100 years after the first one and it spoils a few things, but the protag is not a masochist and a lot more of her sex is what I think you'd qualify as 'fun'. Moirin is a super adorable narrator and her books are my favorites. If you decide you enjoy the world/writing/fantasy parts enough to want more after all, you can go back to the Phedre and Imriel trilogies later.
