Is there sex-positive fantasy that isn't BDSM? Asking because a lot seems to be, and I'd be interested in non-BDSM variety (since like OP BDSM is not my thing).

You could argue for The Battle Sylph if you really wanted to, but sex-positivity seems to be more a webcomic thing than a book thing.

(Actually, does anyone read Curvy? I tried a little, but it wasn't really my thing. And Pawn might be good if it ever updated.)

Well, there was Bujold's Sharing Knife series, if you can sit through the constant "Dag and Fawn had sex again" scenes.

OP

I read that entire series, and I don't even remember any sex scenes. Was there really much that was explicit?

OT, but are there any series like this, but with a submissive man who's into dominant women at the center? I kind of really tired of "dominant man/submissive woman"...uh, well, dominating pop culture.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
iirc, the heaviest BDSM stuff in that book was F/F

That makes it better. I really want some good literature about submissive men (Venus in Fur doesn't count -- I thought it was boring :p), though.

This SO MUCH. Basically all the BDSM stuff out there is dominant man/submissive woman (which I'm not into at all), if there's ever a dominant woman in any fiction she's an abusive bitch and any submissive men are creepy pervs. I just want something with a dominant woman/submissive man relationship that's portrayed in a fairly healthy and positive way.

Yes! I have a LOT of feelings about this, but lucky for you I'm writing this on a tablet so I won't be composing my thesis here. :). But It really, really bothers me that you hardly ever see dominant women in fictional mdia (or non-fiction for that matter) that are not portrayed as outright cartoons or are raped/tamed into submission by the end of the story.

For all the talk about more men being submissive than women, you sure don't see that in the media.

The only works of media that I've seen that feature dominant women who don't fall into that trap are Smilla in Peter Hoeg's novel "Smilla's Sense of Snow" and Stella Gibson in the tv series "The Fall." Oh, and I guess Madonna's entire lifetime of output. :)

I read a really great pepperoni fanfic once where Pepper only became the dom because Stark asked her, but it was a really nice and tender read with the occasional chapter of kinky kinky bdsm.

Ok, "Pepperoni" has to be one of my favorite ship names (how have I not heard it?).

Also do you have a link?

Text: People keep recommending this series as sex-positive fantasy, but I only made it halfway through the first book. Most of the sex was just the MC letting herself be abused by odious people she didn't respect. I know I'm not the target audience, since I don't get BDSM, but I figured it would at least make sex feel fun. (Also, I wasn't fond of the whole "safe words are for wimps" thing.)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that safe words are for wimps. The character pushes herself o get what she wants. She does eventually use her safe word, when she reaches her actual limit.

I think it really is that it jjust wasn't the book for you. As a masochist, all of the sex was definitely fun to me.

If it counts for anything, I liked what little I've read of Sunstone. I felt a lot more comfortable with how it portrayed BDSM and sexuality in general.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
You might like the mercy Thompson series.

I really loved this series, and I'm fairly neutral about BDSM. Is it sex positive? I think so. The culture the main character is in is pretty open to sex, and the main character is eager to start having sex. I don't know... different strokes, for different folks, I guess.

This is basically my take on it (although I'm also into light BDSM, so I was covered on that front, as well).

It's a culture based around the notion that sex is among the highest forms of love and should be had freely. That's incredibly sex positive, and the abuse that OP mentions is something that's desired by the main character.

It's definitely not for everyone, though, and I can see how and why some people would be put off by it.

1) halfway through the first book is about where I almost gave up - mostly because it was boring and purplish to me - but the actual cool fantasy and politics parts pick up shortly after that. As the series goes on she has sex with more people she wants to (but also definitely continues to let herself be abused by people she doesn't especially care for as a means to an end, so, YMMV)

2) skip to the third trilogy, Naamah's Kiss/Curse/Blessing

It's set about 100 years after the first one and it spoils a few things, but the protag is not a masochist and a lot more of her sex is what I think you'd qualify as 'fun'. Moirin is a super adorable narrator and her books are my favorites. If you decide you enjoy the world/writing/fantasy parts enough to want more after all, you can go back to the Phedre and Imriel trilogies later.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I have to say, I'm really not a fan of how you put that. "Letting herself get abused by odious people she didn't respect"? Which parts are you referring to? The consensual masochism on her part? Or the more dubious stuff, which iirc definitely came across as intentonally dubious. But if you're referring to the masochism...she likes it. It's not "letting herself get abused," she wants it. You don't have to be into BDSM, and it very much sounds like you aren't, but you can say "it wasn't for me" without the kinkshaming.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I got the impression the folks beating up on her didn't actually care whether she consented or not. It was convenient for them to be beating up on someone who accepted pay for it, but it seemed like they'd enjoy it just as much hurting someone who was frantically trying to escape. That was what really seemed fucked up to me.

Did you miss the part where in their society rape is a crime literally considered worse than murder?

Your impressions are way off.

I don't think I got halfway through. In part due to the very beginning when it came to Jesus, but then a little later the selling of the one kid's virginity and then the same kid falls for his benefactor. It just squicked me hardcore. Which sucks because I was looking forward to this book and the bdsm aspect as it's something I'm interested in.

Ah well, it just wasn't for me. Though some of the situations the protag was put in seemed abusive, it wasn't what put me off from the series. Liked the idea of the tattoo though.

Great minds, OP. I haven't submitted it yet, but I just made a secret about this book, too.
