I have to say, I'm really not a fan of how you put that. "Letting herself get abused by odious people she didn't respect"? Which parts are you referring to? The consensual masochism on her part? Or the more dubious stuff, which iirc definitely came across as intentonally dubious. But if you're referring to the masochism...she likes it. It's not "letting herself get abused," she wants it. You don't have to be into BDSM, and it very much sounds like you aren't, but you can say "it wasn't for me" without the kinkshaming.

I got the impression the folks beating up on her didn't actually care whether she consented or not. It was convenient for them to be beating up on someone who accepted pay for it, but it seemed like they'd enjoy it just as much hurting someone who was frantically trying to escape. That was what really seemed fucked up to me.

Yeah, that's not D'Angeline culture at all and every character in the book (the first one at least) would be absolutely horrified to be seen that way.
