Another happy thread

[personal profile] sarillia 2015-02-28 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
My anxiety is acting up for no good reason and I could use some nice distractions. So what makes you happy?

Re: Another happy thread

I have another date tonight! Also wanting to draw stuff this weekend. Been feeling kind of anxious myself lately, but I find keeping myself busy with something helps me to relax and enjoy things more.

Congrats and good luck!

I should get back to writing. Working on stuff like that has helped me before too. Maybe I'll work on something really embarrassing and self-indulgent that makes me happy.

Re: Another happy thread

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah you should totally do that! Haha, a lot of the drawings I do are basically self-indulgent so you aren't alone. :) A small handful of people like my silly self-indulgent things when I post them too, and that always cheers me up a little.

Creating is one of the best outlets, I think. It's generally constructive and often helps to keep my mind off of negative things.

This is random, but you sound so much like my best friend right now. I could see her writing this exact comment.

Do you have access to some episodes of Community? That usually helps.

I've never actually seen any of that show. I keep meaning to give it a try but haven't gotten around to it.

I'm sorry to hear that. When I've been anxious lately I've focused on planning my balcony garden.

It's something distracting that has nothing to do with work or people that stress me out.

I draw plans of the existing space and then figure out where things would fit best and which plants are appropriate for the conditions. I make wish lists of things I want and I made a board on pinterest.

I put some piano music on in the background, too.

So what relaxes me is pretending I'm retired and old and possibly a hobbit.

Haha, being a hobbit does seem relaxing.

That distraction from work is probably what I really need. I've got a semester-long group project that has been causing me so much stress because I feel like I have to be on call at all times. I've already been lectured about not getting back to them quickly enough. I'm only taking classes part time because I've worked out that it's best for my health problems because I have time to recover from things that are no big deal for other people, but now I might as well be back to a full time schedule between having to go in to the lab several times a week and the conference calls my group likes to do regularly and everything. It wasn't particularly bothering me when my anxiety hit me tonight but it's definitely not helping.

Your plans for your garden sound like me coming up with new ideas for writing and organizing all my plans. That's always fun.

Semester-long group project!? D:

That sounds horrible. You're allowed to not answer calls and return emails right away if it's late or you're busy.

It's nice to have things to do that aren't on a deadline.
I find it easier to unwind when I'm not idle, I think.

Good luck with your project!

Writing, making icons, crocheting something mindless while watching a fun show, managing to find really REALLY good fic...

Also this post came across my dash. It was nice and happy:

lol my reaction to that post: "aww, that's sweet... omg 'the greatest gift and honor...' ;_;" and then some other favorite moments.

I should definitely get back to knitting and crocheting more. I always feel good about producing something that I can actually use.

TBH I have a love/hate relationship with crocheting. On the one hand, it keeps me productive while I watch something. On the other hand, the only thing I can make without total concentration are scarfs. And I have a fuckton of scarfs.

I really want to make more amigurumi, but the stitches in their patterns are constantly changing. It's impossible to multitask.

I can only mindlessly knit. Crocheting is a lot harder for me and needs more of my concentration, and I always have to be looking at what I'm doing unlike when I'm knitting. I tend to save crocheting for making presents for special occasions.

Animals. Lots of pictures of animals. Shows about animals. I find it incredibly relaxing.

Slightly related to the animals things is that I've been currently binge-watching MLP: FiM to deal with my depression. I love the fact that it's bright and colorful and has lots of characters.

Oh right, I have a collection of animal pictures on my computer for just such occasions! How did I forget?? And maybe I'll see if Too Cute! is still on Netflix.

I could definitely see MLP being good that way. I never got into it but I know exactly what you mean.

Creative hobbies depending on what it is, people often recommend drawing or writing but I have to warn that if you're really into creative things they can be just as stressful as relaxing (I picked a creative field as a career so I know this.) So try to pick something creative that is low pressure. Make a collage, a scrapbook, paint something abstract, etc.

When my anxiety is really bad sometimes the only thing I can do is play games. Either mindless games like solitaire and robot unicorn attack or full blown console games.

Then there's just good old watching comedies. Sometimes I watch tv and I play a game at the same time, my mind just needs to be that distracted.

Re: Another happy thread

[personal profile] sarillia 2015-02-28 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah that creativity can definitely be a double-edged sword if there's any kind of pressure attached. I used to be really good at just enjoying myself with my writing but recently I've found myself actually wanting to do something with it and it's hard to avoid feeling guilty for not spending time on stuff that seems most worthwhile to that end. I need to give myself permission to just have silly fun occasionally when I feel like it.

YouTube cooking shows! A lot of them are really relaxing to me. I marathoned Raw Vegan Not Gross this week even though I am neither raw nor vegan, I just love the hosts voice, its so soothing for whatever reason.
