Re: 'May you live in interesting times' in-fucking-deed

Have you got any idea how fucking large Russia is? I'm not saying the will actually attack but, no, we would not "STOMP" them if they did.

Re: 'May you live in interesting times' in-fucking-deed

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean STOMP in the sense that they would pay a far, far heavier price than NATO considering the military/economic disparity -- short of use of nuclear weapons. Which, again, wouldn't happen as they aren't suicidal.

Russians aren't idiots addled by vodka. They have a self-preservation instinct like everyone else.

I never said they're idiots - on the contrary, it's probably foolish to underestimate them.

I'm not underestimating their intelligence -- they won't go picking a fight they can't -- LITERALLY CANNOT -- win with economic and military differences being as extreme as they are (the Russian sphere vs. NATO)

Re: 'May you live in interesting times' in-fucking-deed

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
...Assuming they were standing alone. The west has a lot of enemies right now, and people who would see the occident weakened.

Re: 'May you live in interesting times' in-fucking-deed

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course, but who is the enemy of the West?

NOT China and India -- we may not always be allies, but we're far too economically dependent on each other to ever risk war. China and India won't back Russia. They won't back NATO, either, but they'll stay out of it.

We're not on great terms with much of the Middle East, true, but when you look at economies and military spending, look who is on top:

Economies:

1 United States 16,768,100
2 China 9,181,204
3 Japan 4,898,532
4 Germany 3,730,261
5 France 2,806,432
6 United Kingdom 2,678,455
7 Brazil 2,243,854
8 Italy 2,149,485
9 Russia 2,096,774
10 India 1,937,797
11 Canada 1,838,964
12 Australia 1,531,282
13 Spain 1,358,263
14 South Korea 1,304,554
15 Mexico 1,259,201

Of those, how many would help Russia (besides Russia itself, obviously?).

Now Military spending:

1 United States United States 640.0 3.8
2 China China[a] 188.0 2.0
3 Russia Russia[a] 87.8 4.1
4 Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia[b] 67.0 9.3
5 France France 61.2 2.2
6 United Kingdom United Kingdom 57.9 2.3
7 Germany Germany[a] 48.8 1.4
8 Japan Japan 48.6 1.0
9 India India 47.4 2.5
10 South Korea South Korea 33.9 2.8
11 Italy Italy[a] 32.7 1.6
12 Brazil Brazil 31.5 1.4
13 Australia Australia 24.0 1.6
14 Turkey Turkey 19.1 2.3
15 United Arab Emirates United Arab Emirates[a][c] 19.0 4.7

Oh look at that: the US spends more than almost everyone COMBINED

If the US actually steps up in time to help out its allies. For the rest of us, that's a big if.

You kidding me?

It's RUSSIA.

The American people ARE sick of war, yes, but we wouldn't hesitate to defend an ally from Russia.

ESPECIALLY the UK.

Good to hear, anon. If it comes to crunch time, I hope your government shares your sentiments.

SA But just to be clear. Let's all be hoping for diplomacy to keep the world from another war here.

Re: 'May you live in interesting times' in-fucking-deed

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I agree.

The US public isn't in any mood to start anything with Russia.

I'm just saying, if they start something...we'll finish it.

After the horrible wars in the Middle-East (pre-emptively attacking a poor, technologically limited nation), going after Russia to defend one of our allies would be a no-brainer for a lot of Americans.

Re: 'May you live in interesting times' in-fucking-deed

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, America's whole strategy during the cold war was to ensure that if there was a hot war it was confined to Europe, would preemptively nuke European soil itself if it came to it, and would actively resist engagement if the (then) USSR confined its own nuclear arsenal to the European theater. That is why France left NATO and developed their independent diplomatic strategy. The only reason the US is getting caught up now is because Russia might threaten one of America's anti-ballistic missile sites in central Europe; sites which will not protect any European country in the slightest!

Re: 'May you live in interesting times' in-fucking-deed

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
France completely rejoined NATO in 2009 though.

Look, I'm not saying that the US is perfect -- recent history has shown that that is not in any way, shape, or form true.

But the conditions now between Russia and the USA are very different compared to the Cold War and heavily (almost comically, to be honest) tipped in the US's favor.

The US is always going to prioritize itself -- it's a nation like any other.

But the fact of the matter is that losing a European ally WOULD be more devastating to the US (especially economically and politically) than engaging with Russia because any conflict between the US and Russia would be so much in the US's favor.

Whereas if the US did nothing in response to a major military strike on a NATO ally, the entire agreement (and American influence) would collapse.

Russia simply isn't on the level that the USSR was. The US may not be as dominant as it was in the 90s, but a HUGE gulf still exists between the two nations.

And that's not taking into account American psychology -- which would never tolerate an attack against, say, the UK by Russia.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
USA is still in NATO, and the wacky old conservatives learned to hate Russia in their cribs and hate it still.

There's no way the USA stays out.
