Oh God, that elicits a terror response. Was traumatized after it happened to Tony and Ziva on NCIS a few years ago (that wasn't the greatest week waiting for the next episode).

Oh, ANY car scene gets that reaction from me. Even when I was watching Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and, having read the books a million times, knew it wouldn't happen.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah same. I always expect it now.

For me, movies and TV Shows are getting to the point where some things are so obviously telegraphed in advance I wonder why they even bother anymore.

Like the whole ~seemingly random~ interruption of dialog at a crucial moment is simply a way to drag out whatever mystery reveal the writers have in mind until later in the episode or whatever.

And of course, some camera angles, such as across-the shoulder shots of car drivers or passengers.

Me too!

Same. Anything from that SPN episode always reminds me of wrapping up the first season for the first time and thinking, "well, I'll just watch the finale and start the next season tomorrow." Hahaha nope! I came in way late and knew a lot of things through fandom osmosis, but I had no idea that happened. It's still startling to watch, and I've been through it at least ten times.

Oh, I brace for that too. Also, when ever someone walks into the street without looking both ways especially if they are arguing, I cringe waiting for them to get hit by a vehicle.

+1

If you see someone going from point A to point B instead of simply cutting to the part where they're already there, it's always a bad sign.

My mother once remarked that daytime soaps never had a scene in a car unless there was going to be an accident. Other types of show aren't like that, but if I realize I'm watching a scene in a car on a show that tends not to do car scenes, I always expect an accident.

Yup, I think both too. (I'm pretty much always waiting for terrible shit to happen...)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I get you. I have the same problem with "through the shelves" camera angle: I'm sure there's a stalker watching and dreads the moment of reveal - that doesn't necessarily come, especially in not-horror genres like garden or kitchen shows, science programs, etc... I'm equally disappointed and relieved, every damn time.

I used to expect that but then I got into Top Gear. They spend so much time with a camera in their cars it pretty much breaks you of the expectation and when something DOES happen, you roll with it. And sometimes they roll with it. Literally.

Urg, me too! And then sometimes it goes long enough that I relax and then something actually *does* hit it.

Yeah same, I always expect the car to get smashed into too.

Image: Three screencaps where we see the character in profile, sitting inside a car, perpendicular to the street in the background.

Text: whenever I see this camera angle in a car, I automatically assume that the car is about to be t-boned. It always makes me tense.

Too many/movies/shows/music videos has conditioned this response in me.

I so wanna geek out about how film and television has developed its own language and the impact this has on viewers and how they interpret things.

Also a trip down memory lane to the beginning of storytelling in film, and how that wasn't pretty, and how far we have gotten since then!

But Secret Maker I know how you feel, some story telling cues in film are used so much that you expect something to happen, this is usually the moment when someone comes in and turn the trope on its head.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I have the same reaction. Also, car crashes are my one trigger, so it is extremely painful when it happens.

Me too.

And sometimes my anticipation builds it up so much that it's almost anticlimactic when it actually happens. On the other hand, when they use the camera angles they usually use for driving scenes and they get hit from the side, it's really startling.
