USB drive + water

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I spilled water on a USB drive with some important stuff on it. I've patted the outside dry but I'm wondering if something will explode if I connect it to my computer.

Thoughts?

+ 1 MILLION

This this this. Leave it for at least 24 hours before you try to plug it into anything.

This has saved numerous electronics of mine from death by tea or coffee.

Put it on the dashboard of your car with your car facing the sun. Don't touch it for at least two days. The longer the better.(Yes, you can still use your car. Just don't use the drive.)

Like others have said, as long as you make sure it's 101% dry before you do anything with it, then it shouldn't normally damage anything when you connect. Whether the water has damaged the drive itself, that's hard to say.

If it's any consolation to you, I once spilled half a litre of green tea onto my laptop. The screen went dark, there were some weird fizzing sounds inside the casing. I powered it off, took the battery out, and tea was literally dripping out of the battery housing.

That was two years ago. Barring a small corner of the screen looking weirdly bright for a few days after the initial drenching (I guess because it still hadn't dried out properly) I haven't seen any ill-effects yet.

As everyone said, give it at least a day or two (depending on how drenched it got) before putting it into any device. If you don't need it in the next two days and the stuff on it is that important, I'd leave it even longer.

I once forgot I had a USB drive in my jeans pocket when I washed said jeans (oops), and the thing still works. The data's fine as well, so as long as you make sure that the stick is really, really 100% dry (it's the insides that count!) before using it, you should be fine.
