I like the second one better, but more because I prefer fanart to look more realistic and not cartoonish. I just don't really get the appeal of cartoonish fanart, unless it's for a cartoon/comic canon.

Im the complete opposite. Rarely if ever do I find realistic fanart looks good, mostly super stiff, dull and either looks traced or very uncanny valley if you do something wrong. Cartoony art lets people explore adapting people into a variety of styles (it doesnt always work, see: 99% of anime styled stuff) and theres personality and warmth you can find in it. Not saying Im a particular fan of some of the more tumblrish styles tho

elsa chang, tacogrande/jaysica, cigar-blues, nna, elgunto, sonny0029, hyamei, hakuku (not so much the subject matter as it is her bgs are soooo pretty), toerning etc. theres a looot more but most of them are more original artwork than fanart.
