I fall into this trap too WRT to Good Omens, but I actually think both examples here are adorable.

I get what you mean, anon. I admit to being partial to drawings of characters that flatter their physical appearances.

Honestly? The art above just seems so much more... alive to me? The dudes below are generic hawt dudes. They could be anyone. (in fact, I sort of thought they were Holmes and Watson and was confused about the glasses).

But to each their own, I guess. I figure that since sexual attraction is a big part of many people's lives, it's silly to judge someone for preferring fanart of good-looking characters over fanart of those the person does not deem good-looking.

Oh, good, I'm not the only one who thought it was Holmes and Watson.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
HOW? It looks nothing like any depiction of Holmes and Watson ever?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
When it comes to Good Omens, yes, yes you are shallow. More so if you are also one of those people who rewrites or prefers to read Aziraphale as skinny and good looking.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I know he's definitely described in the book as not being skinny, but I can't remember any definite mention of how un/attractive he was otherwise.

Unless you're implying that being pudgy automatically means someone isn't good looking.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
da

The only hint of his body type is when his hands are described as plump, but that's not really a good indicator of actual size because I know a lot of skinny people with plump hands and a few heavier people with somewhat bony or average hands. The chubby thing would go with the whole angelic cherub thing that a lot of people imagine with Aziraphale though and it's a headcanon I like. I think people have room to interpret his appearance differently though

AYRT

True enough (as someone who's heavier with pretty skinny fingers). IIRC we get more description of his clothes and his demeanor than we do of him physically.

I just find it bizarre that people manage to go from 'plump hands' to 'canonically unattractive and therefore it's a moral offence to depict him as so'.

It just smacks of automatically equating 'plump' with 'unattractive'.

Different strokes for different folks. I find the top piece much more expressive, vivid, and appealing than the bottom piece, which reads as dull and stiffly-posed to me.

Image: Two pictures of the same characters. One is more cartoonish with flatter colors in general, while the other is a bit more elaborated. The first one has a "thumb down" icon next to it, and the other a "thumb up"

I much prefer fanart that makes the character good looking. This makes me feel so shallow!

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
This would be the reason why I have hilariously seen people mistake shippy Erwin/Levi art for Steve/Tony art. It was--and continues to be--really, really funny to me, and it happens more than you'd think.

Maybe just, you know, find characters you already find attractive.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
the problem with Good Omens is that the characters in question are given very little physical description. they could look pretty much like anyone (for example, I think one of the only things we know about Aziraphale is that he has plump hands and a poor fashion sense) it's just that fandom has more or less chosen a basic template for them

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, I think drawing Tony as a tiny bishie is just on a whole other level than "making him attractive".

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just baffled as to how anyone could make that mistake? Erwin as Steve I could see, but how you'd see Tony as Levi just... how? Is all this art close-up or missing all references to the difference in height? Even then, how do you see Tony in Levi's general character design? Even their hairstyles look nothing alike.

Baffled.

I've seen the mistake happen the most with this piece (warning, nsfw):

I feel like some people just think "big blond guy and smaller brunette guy with a goatee," and in this one they can't see the goatee, and obviously are ignoring literally everything else that points to a different fandom.

How... How would you confuse Erwin/Levi with Steve/Tony unless the art was REALLY terrible/so stylized that everyone looks the same? I mean, Levi looks NOTHING like Steve OR Tony. He's like... well, to be honest--inserting a J-Pop reference here--he looks like an animated Nishikido Ryo from Kanjani8. Short, cranky, and cute. I wouldn't consider Steve OR Tony short or 'cute'.

*enjoys the link* Mmm... thanks...

But I'm still not sure how people could confuse that with SteveTony. For one, the clothing Erwin's wearing, and for two, I always thought Steve and Tony were pretty comparative height/sizewise, and Levi's very obviously smaller than Erwin.

I'm amused at people looking at that and their first thought being SteveTony and not 'hmmm two guys from a fandom I don't know', or 'Oh ErwinLevi!'.

I like the second one better, but more because I prefer fanart to look more realistic and not cartoonish. I just don't really get the appeal of cartoonish fanart, unless it's for a cartoon/comic canon.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Im the complete opposite. Rarely if ever do I find realistic fanart looks good, mostly super stiff, dull and either looks traced or very uncanny valley if you do something wrong. Cartoony art lets people explore adapting people into a variety of styles (it doesnt always work, see: 99% of anime styled stuff) and theres personality and warmth you can find in it. Not saying Im a particular fan of some of the more tumblrish styles tho

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Could you give examples? I'm interested to see what you like.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
elsa chang, tacogrande/jaysica, cigar-blues, nna, elgunto, sonny0029, hyamei, hakuku (not so much the subject matter as it is her bgs are soooo pretty), toerning etc. theres a looot more but most of them are more original artwork than fanart.

Full same, don't even care if it makes me shallow. This is often a topic of debate re: faceless/non-human characters, too, making them hot or "generic" or whatever and I still don't care. Gimme dem pretty boys.
