I don't like this trope either, but it always feels like people who try to apply it to Sharon are just trying to justify their butthurt over the fact that their pet ships aren't ever going to be canon.

We don't even know if she's going to be a love interest, for shit's sake, so can fandom please stop wailing about how she's so obviously just a cheap Peggy knock-off meant to assert Steve's heterosexuality?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
But it's already canon, isn't it? In the comics.

And no offense but I do think a lot of people aren't willing to admit that others might legitimately find it creepy.

The same way that Howard/Steve transitioning to Tony/Steve is creepy and squicky as fuck. Sorry but it really annoys me when people try to pin all criticism on ship wars.

+1

In the comics, Steve ran around with a flaming robot dude, an underwater king wearing hotpants, and a couple of adolescents during WWII. It's pretty safe to say what holds true in the comics does not necessarily hold true in the movies.

Maybe they'll make Sharon a love interest. Maybe it will be done in a creepy fashion. But the people who are throwing a shitfit over her basically just existing for a couple of scenes now aren't objecting for legitimate reasons, because merely existing in the general vicinity of another character is not actually objectionable.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
You seem to be missing the point though:

I haven't seen anyone criticize Sharon's scenes in and of themselves.

I have seen people criticize the disappointing lack of development -- which is fair considering she was very out of focus in The Winter Soldier. She may, of course, be more developed later on, but they didn't do nearly as much with her as they did with, say, Sam Wilson for instance. That isn't a criticism of Sharon herself, though, merely how the writers incorporated her into the story.

That Sharon is Steve's love interest in the comics is a BIG reason why people are saying they don't want it.

Natasha and Peggy are both readily accepted as fanon and canon love interests for Steve. And lots of people would be happy to see Natasha/Steve become canon (I personally, have no issue with it, although I do prefer Clintasha and then BuckyNat).

The reason Sharon AS A POSSIBLE LOVE INTEREST is taking heat is because, since it's happened in the comics, and people find the dynamic creepy, they don't want to have to endure it in MCU.

It's not that she's around Steve. It's that the possibility of a romantic relationship risks squicking people the hell out and negatively impacting how they view the characters.

So they're raising objections on those grounds.

No, I think the point is intensely stupid.

You are criticizing shit that has not happened yet. It would be like people freaking out over the possibility of Mockingbird/Hawkeye becoming movie canon - the only basis for complaint is that 1) the character exists in the MCU and 2) the character is a love interest in an entirely different canon universe. The problem is not people saying "I'd rather not see them get together", it is the massive fucking temper tantrums people are throwing about this character daring to exist at all because they've decided for whatever asinine reason that the ship is a foregone conclusion.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
A ship that has not happened yet, but has happened in the comics.

And that would really harm the way I see the characters, especially Steve, because it squicks me out.

I've already had too many Steve/Howard fanfics ruined by the introduction of Steve/Tony so I'd rather avoid it in the actual films.

Also:

"it is the massive fucking temper tantrums people are throwing about this character daring to exist at all because they've decided for whatever asinine reason that the ship is a foregone conclusion."

Where the hell have you seen any of this?

Where has anyone stated that Sharon SHOULDN'T EXIST? Because I haven't seen that at all. Sharon being a badass SHIELD agent carrying on Peggy's legacy is NOT AT ALL a problem to me.

No one is saying Sharon doesn't have the right to exist or "how dare she!"

The ship isn't equal to the character. Criticizing Steve/Sharon is not criticism of Sharon herself. She isn't the ship.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Out of curiosity, do you really think it wouldn't happen? Seems rather likely to me (and I personally wouldn't mind).

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't the very possibility of her becoming a love interest what people are finding objectionable? To these folks, any kind of romance will be creepy regardless of portrayal just because of the relation to Peggy.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
can fandom please stop wailing about how she's so obviously just a cheap Peggy knock-off meant to assert Steve's heterosexuality

Except that's all she is in the MCU. She currently has no personality to speak of.

Now, if she gets developed more and it turns out she's Peggy's cousin or something rather than a close relation? I could ship it.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
No, she's a cameo character meant to show Fury's level of casual paranoia, and to show that there are regular SHIELD agents who are still good guys to audience members who don't watch AoS.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really have any pet ships, especially when it comes to Steve, but I still find the possibility of Steve/Sharon a little off.

The writing in the movies could prove me wrong, but I have my doubts when the movies are getting more and more overloaded with characters and they weren't that great at writing romance into them in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
The movies could also not make her a love interest at all.

Like, this is a thing that's a genuine possibility. We have no idea what they're doing with her in the MCU.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Sure.

They might not make her a love interest. And that would please me.

But what exactly is your issue to people raising objections that they WILL make her one?

No one's said Sharon needs to be written out of the story. Just that we don't want her in a romantic relationship with Steve. Which, given that she is in a romance with him in the comics, is a distinct possibility -- not one that's being pulled out of thin air.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
A whole hell of a lot of people have said she needs to be written out of the story.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
WHERE?

I've never seen anyone HERE make that argument. Just that they don't want Steve/Sharon.

Hell, most people seem disappointed that she had such a small role in The Winter Soldier because they didn't feel they got a chance to know her.

If you're talking about Tumblr then that's stupid because people here can't take responsibility for the words of a random person.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
FS doesn't exist in a vacuum. Fandom trends exist beyond one very small section of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Well of course, but saying:

" it always feels like people who try to apply it to Sharon are just trying to justify their butthurt over the fact that their pet ships aren't ever going to be canon."

is basically dismissing the fact that some people do legitimately find the Steve/Sharon pairing creepy. Again, it's using ship wars to dismiss criticism of the pairing.

And disliking the pairing doesn't mean one dislikes Sharon herself.

If you like the pairing (or don't mind it) that's perfectly alright, but if you're going to imply that people are objecting to it solely because they're "butthurt" don't be surprised when you get pushback.
