Honestly, Peter Pan is one of those things where you're going to be offensive, no matter how hard you try. The Disney version was super racist, even if it was 'just fun' at the time. The original book wasn't any better. It's not just the casting; Tiger Lily wouldn't be any less racist a character if she were played by and actual Native American.

I'm in this line.

Tiger Lily is a racist character. There's just no way of avoiding that. At the end of the day, I think, you're either okay with remaking Peter Pan, or you're not.

Not necessarily. The SyFy channel did a Neverland prequel where Tiger lily's entire tribe had fallen through into Neverland. They used Native actors and it was really quite neat.

...why could they cast Native actors for that, but not for Earthsea?! O___o

They did something right? Where, when?

Unfortunately it was also the weakest of their fantasy adaptations (Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan).

Most new versions change enough of the story anyway that they could change it to make her not racist as well.

I heard Peter Pan and the Pirates was alright on that front?

Best Tiger Lily in this version imo. Great Big Little Panther too.

Yeah that's kinda my feelings on this. It's one of those stories you'd more or less have to rewrite from scratch to get rid of a lot of what we now consider offensive, and after that much rewriting, would it still be Peter Pan? Maybe this movie's managed to successfully update the story, maybe not, who knows. Good luck to it, whatever the case.

I agree. But I think as long as they stick to boy who doesn't want to grow up and lives in a fantasy land and takes some kids with him on an adventure, it'll stay true.
